Service A at MB dealer or German care care?
Hello guys,
Quick question...
My service A is coming up. The MB dealer charges $380 for the same exact procedure the local German car care prices at $180.
What is so different?
Any recommendations?
Thanks!
Paul.

That's also a couple hundred higher than I was quoted for an A-Service at my dealer last week. Only guess I can make is that they mistakenly quoted you for a B-Service?

Thanks for the reply PavementPounder!
The quoted price is correct on both. I just wonder what the difference between an official MB dealer and any other mechanic. Is there such a drastic distinction?

Several MB's Superperformance MK III Cobra
An example on the parts is the oil filter from the Stealer is packaged in the white box with the blue MB stars on it. My Indy uses a Mann filter that is more than 1/2 less and is the indentical filter that is in the little white box!!!! In fact if you open the white box the filter is stamped with MANN.

Wow!!! Thanks Lou K!
Sorry for the delayed response but I just got a chance to read my thread.
This is valuable info man!
I will definitely give my Indy a chance and let you guys know the experience.
BTW,
My concern was the they purposely mess parts for future services...

I am suprised that the dealer is that high. I just had Service A completed on my SL and I found a coupon from another MB dealer here in the Washington DC metro area for $188. The other dealer matched the price. Not sure how many dealers you have in Miami but there are approximately 5 dealers not including Baltimore. Did you check the internet for area dealers. With business being what it is, there should be a dealer who is running a special. Isn't there also a MB dealer in Ft. Lauderdale? Best of luck to you!

Hey, look....it's almost 2019!!
New to the forum...had ?s about a- and b- services and only found this thread which is quite old. Thought I would bump this for more current info, rather than start a new thread needlessly.
Have had my '09 SL550 for just over a year. A-Service is due in December. My Service manual doesn't differentiate between 'A' and 'B'...it merely lists service schedules by mileage...1k, 2k, 3k, 5k, 10k....up to 150k. Nowhere in it does it even mention 'A-service' or 'B-service'
Could someone clarify what each includes, and true to the OP...opinions on Dealer-vs-GermanSpecialtyShops? I called my nearest dealership and was told; A-service runs $300 for ALL Mercedes models??! In essence they are going to charge someone with the 4-cylinder engine the same as the 8 or 12 cylinder engine...that makes no sense to me. Am I crazy?? (I'll answer...yup!) lol
Thanks guys.
Peace!

You are not crazy unless you pay $300 for an oil change. Basically, an A service is just an oil change. Some dealerships will also do a quick inspection of other functions (brakes, wiper blades, etc.) The B service is that plus other items that are mileage or time dependent, such as brake fluid, transmission fluid, etc.

I found this document on the interwebs at some stage, I didn't produce it so can't vouch for its authenticity.

Thanks Nosmo...sorry for the late appreciation. Just a glorified oil change. Any other car dealer would do far more ‘looking/checking’ on other things while in for routine oil changes. My VW dealer has a 37-point complimentary inspection with every visit. It’s just their way of possibly getting more service tickets written while the owner is already expecting to open their wallets.
Thanks, again...

Interesting... dealers in my area, change the oil by sucking out of the dipstick and still charge $300 plus. I purchased a mitey-vac from amazon and a Mann filter (same as mb oe) from advance auto. And 0-40 Mobil synthetic, total cost $160, and I have the vac for the next time when it will cost around $50 fior the “service A”, the rest of service A Is checking and lubricating top rubber etc. changing the oil and filter was a simple process. I definitely will never pay anyone $300 just to change the oil and filter

wow, dealers in other areas charge way more! I paid last year $150 for oil change, most likely it was a full service A... I had similar experience with the EIS r&r - i paid $900 for part and labor, when others posted quotes starting at $1500...
