The use of trickle Charger in cigarette plug
Yesterday, I purchased an MB Trickle Charger set from the local MB dealership for my 2011 SL 550. A service manager told me that on the road, we could also charge the battery by plugging it into cigarette or 12 Volts plug. That is a very nice feature.
When I read its manual, charging in cigarette lighter or 12 volt plug is limited to M-Class and SLR McLaren Coupe. I don't see any description about SL 550. I wonder the trickle charge could indeed charge by plugging in cigarette lighter socket in SL 550. Does anybody try it yet?

I know you have a 550, but here's a couple of interesting threads. It Seems if your lighter doesn't work with the ignition off you won't be able to charge from there.
