fluid leakage - please help

I have a 2003 SL500 that I have owned for over one year. Recently I started to notice fluid on my garage floor. It seems as if the fluid is leaking from the center of the engine - can't really tell the exact location because there is a cover under the car. The fluid is dark and oily - could be transmission or engine oil - don't know. The leakage is about the size of two quarters every 3-4 days. Car has aprox. 70,000 miles on it.

Can anyone tell me what this problem may be? Also, how much would it cost to fix such a problem. I just want to be aware so the dealer will not BS me.

Thanks in advance!

no, MB told me that I don't qualify because my mileage were too close to being up when I was ready to purchase it.

Take it to the dealer. I am superised that the computer did not give any warning of low oil or transmission fluids.

I'm obviously perhaps late in dealing with your query and I hope it hasn't cost you too much and that it hasn't caused any accident for you. The problem you have had is a well know problem fo MB - known by MB since 1996 an every one in three cars with a 772 .6 transmission has it. Of course MB will tell you nothing is wrong with the car. I have a thread on the 5th page above and you will see what my experience has been at th hands of MB. I sued and won but you should see th tricks they were up to in the case, they even tried to interfere with one of my witnesses but it backfired for them . If you want any background on this just give you email and I will copy some interesting documents to you . Keep safe. Regards, Philip

Take it to a local, put it on the lift and have them take the cover off,-a hand full of bolts is all it takes....
it should not cost much. and get under the car with the local and have him show you where the leak is.
at least you will know what to expect when you take it to the dealer
i had a similar pblm and it was the oil plug that needed just a quarter turn.i was loosing sleep before i took it to a local to diagnose it.

i hope your pblm is also benign.

Agreed - find a good local if you can who works on R230's.

Rear main seals are quite a common leak on R230 V8's. My Sl55 has a slight weep but does not leave a puddle and I am missing my undercarriage tray. I was quoted $1200 from a very reputable Mercedes Indy to replace the rear main seal.

Hi, my problem was the same as yours and what happened was that the bushing which connects the electronic cable with the transmission unit leaks. It's a well known problem to MB. These bushings are colour coded and are replaced regularly by MB and by virtue of the colour code they know when it had been last replaced. I have TSBS ( technical support bulletins) issued by MB on this topic which I am prepared to copy to whosoever wants same. The danger as regards this problem s that if it is not dealt with promptly tg transmission oil will not alone continue to leak but it can creep ' up' along the cable (believe it or not but defying gravity). And enter the ECU an then the real problem begin. What happens next is that when oil gets into the ECU it interferes with the transmission resulting in erratic conduct such as no power, car going into false neutral while the car is in motion ( can be scary as came out in my cae where I sued MB for this problem) and all my witnesses including myself experienced this problem with some real scary experiences. So be careful. You will find, incidentally, that th pan under the engine will be full o oil as a consequence of this leak. My transmission had leaked almost half of the oil in it before th problem was eventually identified and even though I had informed Agent of the loss in power. I can copy these documents to whosoever wants a copy. Please send your email address to mine at: philip@philiposullivan.com

Take care and be vigilant
