SL/R230: Stall out on acceleration

Stall out on acceleration
I have a 2004 SL 500 and it runs really well. However, If I accelerate hard from a stop, it accelerates at first and then makes a hard bump like and stops taking gas. I let off on the gas and it picks up and runs. I can ease it up to about 20 mph and get on it hard and it runs great. It is almost like something is cutting the engine out on hard acceleration. Anyone have any ideas what to look for? Thanks

It could be a fuel pump issue, or it could be related the throttle. You could try the throttle resync:
1. Make sure everything in the car is turned off and closed.
2. Turn the key to position 2 so all the dash lights are illuminated.
3. Press the accelerator fully to the floor, depressing the "kick-down" button.
4. Hold the pedal for 5 seconds and continue to hold it down.
5. Turn the ignition switch back one click to position 1.
6. Release the accelerator pedal, but leave the key in position 1.
7. Sit quietly and wait for about two minutes - do NOT open or turn anything on.
8. Listen for a "click" or "ping" noise form the dash.
9. Start the engine and drive the car for at least five minutes.

Good catch - ESP will intervene and cut fuel when it detects wheel spin. My SL is not very intrusive, but my CLK was awful unless the tires were brand new. Anytime I wanted to jump out in traffic, I had to disable ESP.

Tried both of these suggestions and it did not change. This just happens when I press the accelerator hard from a stop. If I am rolling and gradually apply gas, it will run good and fast.

Its hard to say without any codes, get yourself a OBDII reader, it will pay for itself very quickly.
My 04 had a similar problem, it came back to life after resetting it by tuning of the ignition, open and close the driver door and restart the engine.
Mine turned out to be the electronic accelerator pedal.
Good luck.
