Brake disc wear depth

How much disc wear is "too much"?

A discernible lip has formed on the rear discs on my R230. How much is OK? The pads appear to have quite a bit of life left in them. I plan on replacing discs and pads at the same, but that may be next year, just guessing at the life left in the pads.

And just a sidebar question: why do the rear discs wear faster than the front discs? Seems like the front discs do a lot more work ... and should be expected to wear faster. I had the same experience on wife's W211 ... rear discs wore faster than fronts.

I just replaced all my brakes last weekend my 07 sl550 has 29000 and the front pads were toast just before wear sensor but the rears still had half life the rotors on the front were pretty scored and the rear had a lip on the rotor. Replaced with Zimmerman and Ankbono they work great and NO BLACK DUST 😀

Look here:

http://benzbits.com/R230/BrakeDiscSpecs.pdf

Yours is a 230.471 and likely with the sport package (code 951), so it would be the last one - minimum rotor thickness of 22mm (replace when below 22.5mm).

Thank you, Rodney. I appreciate that info.

I searched You Tube for videos of R230 brake jobs ... no joy. Aside from disabling SBS via SDS, is there anything special to know about this work?

Thanks also for the Zimmerman-Akebono replacement parts tip. Duly noted. Do you have a vendor (or vendors) you can recommend?

Dave3359: I note on Pelican Parts brake offerings that certain rotors are noted "Not for cars with 951 kit" (or words to that effect). Just curious ... are our 2007 SL550s fitted with 951 kits? How do I determine that?

Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, MINI and more!
Appreciate the mention, Dave!

@Heatwave - here are pads, rotors and sensors. +1 to going with Zimmerman rotors and Akebono pads (low dust and noise). Great alternative to Genuine MB parts. I am always here if you ever have any questions about parts. You can also shoot me a PM with the last 8 digits of your vin number and I can confirm fitment/put a quote together for you.

Rotors: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg3.htm#item8

Hi Heatwave I have the build sheet for my car and it says that I have the 951 option. But I had the original rotors on the car so I got the part #s off the rotors and gave them to pelican they crossed referenced them and got me the right ones. Very helpful people hope this helps

951 is the sport package. It included 18" rims, paddle shifters, and the sportier front bumper, along with larger brakes.
