Is it still the case that on all R230 V12s (including the unicorn 2009 model) that a motor mount swap requires complete removal of the engine? Did Mercedes revise the part at all, or is there an aftermarket solution so you don't have to do this every 30k miles? Thanks in advance!

I believe the reason engine removal is required is because of how the turbo piping is ran right in front of the mounts. there is someone else on the board that did a single rear turbo swap and that made it so the engine mounts are a cake walk to remove/replace.

I'm surprised there is no work around at all!

I replaced the motor mounts on mine, without removing the engine.

My car is different, but I'm familiar with the differences - the motor mounts are in a different position on the R230, but that doesn't affect the result.

I supported the engine and dropped the subframe. It's not for novices, and there's a couple of things to be aware of, but it's straightforward.

Nick,

Thats good to hear. Could you just expand on "my car is different?" It sounds like on the R230 you can support the motor and do it similar but maybe not because your car is different. Thanks!

Funny, the user profile on the left used to show my car. I have a couple of W220 S600 TT, which is very similar to the SL600 under the skin, but does have some key differences.

The SL has the engine mounted further back than in the CL or S. The motor mounts are immediately behind the steering rack, rather than just in front of it. Therefore the subframe is different.

On the w220, the rear subframe mounting bolt heads form a kind of pivoting axis that neatly intersects the universal joint at the bottom of the steering column. Therefore the subframe can be lowered by removing the front mounting bolts and just loosening the rear ones, and the subframe can pivot down without having to disconnect the steering rack.

This may be different on the R230, so while I'm sure you can still drop the subframe, you may need to disconnect the steering, that's all. The PAS return line and PAS & ABC electrical connections may have different routings, too.

The V12TT motor mounts are a particular nightmare. I have lots of picture to illustrate what I did if you wish.

I think it's because of the new "infinite scroll" skin that was added to the forum recently. I mentioned it in the "Announcements" forum, so we'll see if it get fixed.
