SL 600 # 5 of the list - 8 fastest production cars
Popular Mechanics 2004 May Issue

Article on the 8 fastest production cars in the world. E55 (8) and SL 600 (5) made the list. My only complaint is the times for the E55 were 12.89 at 115 and 0 to 60 in 5.06. All the other cars performed according to recent road tests so I don't think the weather had much to do with it. Before I modified my E55, I ran consistently between 12.5 and 12.6.

Gallardo 12.53 at 116
Corvette Z06 12.53 at 115.38
SL 600 12.48 at 117.42
Porsche 911 Turbo 12.39 at 118.43
Viper SRT-10 12.07 at 120
Ford GT 11.69 at 122.74
Saleen S7 11.51 at 127.38
Overall a great showing for MB. Carrera GT, SLR and Ferrari declined the invitation.

Its placing fifth rather than third implies Popular Mechanics tested a genuine stock SL600 as opposed to the modified-ECU version CD used. I can attest first hand to the difference the ECU software makes.

I have a 2003 E55. Why do you doubt it is the new one? I could send you some literature on the W211 E55; they now have a engine conservatively rated at 469 hp. I had mine dynoed before my upgrades and it rated out at 485 after converting for the drive train loss. After some upgrades it now has 570 at the crank. My best time so far with stock tires and traction control on was 12.1 at 118. I have pictures of car running at track with the corresponding time sheets. I will be at about 11.7 or 11.8 with my new tires and rims. Let me know if you need further info on the new E55s

Hello moa4r,
I still have not received the HREs yet, scheduled for next week. I did get the BF Goodrich DOT approved Drag tires for my stock AMG rear rims for the track
