How the H*ll did this happen?

First things first, I love my 600. By far the most fun I’ve ever had driving a car!
Now onto the issue. Let me start by saying that I rarely put my top up, I keep my car in my building with a cover over it. I put the top up yesterday to give her a bath and found that the passenger side rubber trim had wrinkled?? Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks, Mike

You have leaking cylinders in the top hydraulics. Likely the front latch cylinder...it's the first to go.
Search for how to fix DIY, or send the leakers to Top Hydraulics for repair.

The fluid wrinkles the rubber and makes a mess. Run your fingers under the trim and then go wash your hands.
You can't really fix it. You can replace the trim, which is a chore, and spendy. Or get a sharp razor knife and trim off the wrinkled part.

Thanks for the quick response, you are exactly right! Oily. I was REALLY hoping it was going to be simple. Thanks again, Mike

Kbob999, I’m not really all that familiar with forums, I went to the search box and typed in seal leak r230, but didn’t see any videos. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks again

Mike, Another trick is to take the seal and tuck it under the headliner plastic instead of over it and the problem will disappear...Also make sure you use Cabriolet Hydraulics for your front latch rebuild...They have a patented hose coupler that avoid you from ripping your interior apart to remove the hydraulic lines from the rear of the car http://cabriolethydraulics.com/produ...-roof-lock.php

Here's one with a seal replacement from the other forum. Use at your own risk:

Here is a thread on the front lock repair that I did. Look for the newer style seal mentioned further down in the thread.

I did the top cyl and the damaged seals on a couple cars for customers. It's a terrible job and the parts are expensive. This is why I dislike convertibles lol.

Sorry it took so long to get back with everyone, every car I have is apart at the moment I bought a repair kit off of eBay and I’m going to try and replace the seal today. Still not sure about the rubber on top. That will come later. Wish me luck, I’ll let you know how it goes.

The original, failed component is a rod seal designed specifically for an hydraulic cylinder. I presume what you got from eBay is an o-ring used in many applications.

Why replace a rod seal with something else when the original rod seal is available? And experience suggests that an o-ring may soon leak. I simply don't get it.

When I get the headliner off I’m going to look and see how difficult it is to take the hydraulic line off. If it’s not horrible I will take it completely off and send it in to be rebuilt. I agree with you. I would much rather fix it right.

Bad news my friend, the hydraulic lines are attached to the lock cylinder permanently, if you want to remove it, you'd have to trace it all the way back to the trunk area which isn't fun. What you can do, is cut it off, then send it to a hydraulic shop and they'll make new fittings for you to join it right where you cut it. Something MB should've done in the first place, i bet they think this will never leak, along with the ABC line, bury it deep under the transmission and suspension.

Well I have to say, that went WAY better then expected When I removed the headliner there was very little residual oil in a few places, when I had bought the car I was told that they would have to keep it another week or so because of an hydraulic leak. I called the dealership today and they confirmed it was the front latch and that they replaced it...so the rubber weather strip had the oil already on it when I bought the car and after it got (really) hot this summer it warped.
They would not replace the strip (it was worth a try) but at least I don’t have to screw with the latch!! Now onto finding and replacing the strip. Thank you everyone that jumped into help

Ok I’ve looked at Mercedes part schematics until I’m blue in the face, would anyone happen to know the part number for the trim. It looks like it could be one of several and I’m afraid to buy the wrong thing. If the closest dealer wasn’t 100 miles away I would run up there and just buy one.

NO LONGER ACTIVE
Part number is A2307900666 (right side) and A2307900566 (left).

Assuming you are in the USA* it looks like you can get them for a bit over $100:

I’m glad I found this thread...when I got my ‘03 SL three years ago, my seal looked the same as the op. Mine is dry and clean, thankfully no leak now. As with his it was repaired prior to purchase. Just tucked it under the headliner and good to go...now, why didn’t I think of it 😎

Quick update, I ended up replacing the weather stripping myself. I found the part online new for $133 and put it in. Thanks again for all of the help everyone.
