Hydraulic Repair Reviews

I'm going to send my front center Hydraulic cylinder in for repair.

There is a big difference in repair prices from Cabriolet and top hydraulics.

The former wants 125.00 without the hose adapters and the latter wants 65.00 for a rebuilt cylinder.

Just needed some reviews on either one. Thanks! (roof repair on 05 SL 600)

My only experience has been with Klaus at Top Hydraulics. I helped another member with his CLK and we used Klaus for the pump and cylinders. I was very impressed with his service.

I sent in my left trunk frame lock cylinder to Top Hydraulics for rebuild. Mainly because I did not want to cut any lines thereby creating another possible leak point as per Cabriolets instructions. They rebuilt the cylinder and also modded the lines at the cylinder so they were now removable, thereby negating the need to remove the entire hyd line when needed to be removed again. All for $120 + $10 return shipping. My only beef was the turnaround time. It was about three weeks there and back.

Top Hydraulics rebuilds/reseals seem fine. For the front cylinder, you can use their piston, and not have to replace the hydraulic lines back to the pump. The line routing can be tough to reproduce. The ring holding the piston in the cylinder can be pried out... or you can drill a hole in the cylinder to push the ring, and pry it out. This may make the cylinder damaged, and unable to use as a core. Check core charges for both, and what cores are acceptable.

The cost of cabriolet may include core charges, therefore the higher price.

The prices have always been pretty close. Cabriolet will rebuild with lines intact, the spliced lines are just an option for a couple of cylinders with hard to route lines. I have been using Cabriolet, their turnaround has been about 2-3 working days.

I have used both in the last year. Both offer great quality and excellent service. For the front cylinder I feel the extra cost of the connector kit was well worth the price to avoid running the lines to the pump.
