I think I saw you posted this on benzworld as well. It's probably due to leaks in the pneumatic part of the latch. See here:
https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...w-fix-diy.html
You might try resetting the PSE pump by pulling fuse 71 (rear panel, under the stowage compartment behind the right seat). Although that is a very temporary fix if it works.
Finally, make sure you are using the metal key properly to unlock the trunk. You also have to pull the handle when you turn the key. See below - it show a CLK, but the SL (and most all MBZs) are the same:

update:
got the trunk to open
i did it by ****ing around with the manual key by turning it to the left while pulling the handle at the same time
it was kind of stiff to get it in at first but it worked

Normally, when you pull the trunk handle, you are just activation a small microswiitch. There is a small spring just to give it some tension, but it's very light. When you insert the key and turn it, it moves a plastic cam into place so that when you pull the handle, it is able to mechanically pull a spring-loaded release for the latch, so it does require more force, but nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe about as much force as opening a door handle.

2005 R 230 SL350 (M112 3.7). Sold the 1966 W113 230SL recently
I’m worried I’ve got too much tension in there. I just feels like a minor explosion when that latch comes free (this is when releasing the lock by key+handle in the “transformer” service position). Looking at the alignment of the boot lid with the fenders would be a good start for adjusting the striker plate, would that be right?

so turn it to the left and you should have where it hits the actuator to open the door. i am not sure how the mechanism works but something has to be under what you are trying to press up
