SL/R230: R230 Sat Nav Unit Installation
Can anyone please guide me with installing a OEM sat nav? I currently have the tape player

Anyone in the west midlands area uk? Supply / fit?
Thanks
Second, on the 05 and later models, the SAT/NAV is not part of the Comand unit, rather it's a separate unit that looks like an external Optical drive, and is installed in the trunk. It uses a DVD navigation maps, and does all the GPS processing. It sends all the Map data and GPS location information to the Comand Unit for display via MOST bus.
So if you're looking for a SAT/NAV unit and you have a 2005 and later, you'll need to be looking for that unit I mentioned above. Here is a link to a installation/retrofit how to:

If on the other hand you have one of the earlier SL models (2003 -2004), which had the Comand 2.0 with a 4:3 screen. Those units were integrated, and the navigation processor was in the head unit.
Here is what the Comand 2.0 looks like:

If not, or if you just get a compass, then most likely there is no navigation processor, so you'd have to replace head unit with one that has navigation. You will also need an antenna with a FAKRA connector.
Needless to say, you will also need some map discs, which are on CD for this system, so they cover relatively small portions, which means you'll have to have multiple CDs to cover a larger portion of the EU. But let me say this, the latest maps available for this system are way out of date, 2008 I think are the latest available.
My suggestion is to buy an aftermarket radio and do a complete revamp of the entertainment system.
