SL/R230: ReInstall Headliner problem

ReInstall Headliner problem
hello..
on my '06 SL55 after replacing the leaky front lock cylinder with the cabriolet hydro solution and a dozen up/down operations i am now at the stage to re-install the headliner..
when i removed the headliner it came off way too easily.. ALL the clips were broken free from the headliner WHICH sort of is an indicator the part has been off before..
SO after using JB Weld, which worked very well (recommended here in another thread) tried to re-hang the headliner..
could not get the "pins" on the rear part to 'snap' into the correct holes so slid the 'pin' parts out of the base part, put the 'pin' parts into the holes but can not slide the base parts into the 'pin' parts..
SO, how have others here gotten the headliner part re-installed..?
