Is a CD UPDATE to NAVIGATION Command 2002 available for the USA, 2003 SL500/R230?
Is a CD UPDATE to NAVIGATION Command 2002 available? My 2003 R230 has the complete USA model set of NAVTEC ONBOARD CDs copyright date 2002.
I think the head unit/Command system/stereo/Navigation system changed in 2005 to play navigation DVDs. The stereo sound is the best I have ever heard. The maps from 2002 or earlier are really out of date.

The CD NAV COMAND 2 system is user hostile (opposite of user friendly), and not used often except by purists or masochists.
My notes show the last CD printed for this system was in 2010. If you can find 2010 CD's...that is the best you can do.

Thanks for the good tips. 2010 would certainly be an upgrade. The prices seem outrageous, and the Southeast USA is rare. I will keep looking. The head unit produces such excellent sound, I am reluctant to replace it.
What is the latest compatible head unit/COMAND unit for all of my 2003 systems. I have the premium sound system in my VIN decode. Is premium sound standard for later head units? Will later head units produce such excellent sound?
Yes this is the coolest car. I have had other Mercedes, Porsches, an Audi, a Lancia… But the 500SL has the best performance, styling, comfort, and color. I really like my Aegean Blue. I put $2-3 grand using my own labor into restoring mainly the hydraulic suspension and roof to factory specs. I think the dealer would have charged $15-20 grand. This car is a dream come true.
Your SL55 AMG probably has 493 horses versus my 302HP. Is the performance mind blowing? Mine is super, smooth, quick, agile.
Put a search on eBay for your region and 2010 disk...one may pop up at a reasonable price. I could use a Region 2.
The R230 is know to be demanding with so many technical systems and features. Because of that, I would only own the AMG models.
Yes it is fast, especially with a smaller blower pulley. The downside is new rear tires every 5000 miles, or less. Perfect.
By any modern standard the GPS sucks in these cars. Why not just use your phone? If you have the MMI you can still have the audio through your factory head unit, and you can get a vent or CD slot mounted phone holder to secure your phone within your field of view.
I bought a 2009 Navteq CD disk 9 Southeast USA on eBay. I can find a couple of New York cities/not New York City, and get route guidance to work. (The latest update I see on eBay is 2011.) So, what is new on the 2009 version???
I think the map content has been updated with new roads, points of interest etc, as one would expect. The map footprint looks larger... I can see roads in the Northeast USA region, and maybe the Central USA. Does each newer than my factory 2002 disk now cover a larger footprint? Is there any functionality or efficiency upgrade with newer copyright years like my 2009 upgrade CD?

I do not know what the Comand info page is. My software is navtech on board 2002 as seen in my first post page cover of the Comand Navigation System User's Guide. It says Robert Bosch Corporation 2002; 2002 Navigation Technologies Corporation. My "Comand Operator's Manual" Info Services/System settings page 183 has no software specs. If that is not sufficient, please be more specific about what to post.
