2005 SL500

Noisy ABC pump.

Hi,
i have a 2005 SL500. 7sp. Australian car.

When I unlock the car most times I hear a noise like a small motor running before I start the car.
Also sometimes I hear it coming on and off while stationary etc. the noise only lasts for about 3-5 seconds.
A merc dealer told me it's the ABC pump and that it would need replacing soon.
I imagine many on this forum have had the same problem. Does it make noise normally or does that suggest a problem.

If that is the case, when look at the parts there seem to be ABC tandem power steering pump and ABC pump.
Are they the same or different or what???

It’s the SBC pump and 100% normal.

Not everyday you can give good news on an R230 forum

ABC only runs with the engine running so as he says above, it 's your SBC pre-charging the system, which is normal. In the US we have a greatly extended warranty period on SBC system components but in general, they are worth replacing before you have a failure as a loss of brakes can be very dangerous.

Yes. It's the SBC pump. Exactly how you say.
I have not had any errors or problems with it just the noise. If that's normal great.

I would be concerned if a dealer advised it was the ABC pump. I know the cars are old but at best it's ignorance, at worst it's trying to sell ABC work which is big money (and would not fix your 'problem')

Gents,

After listening to this forum Iam positive it's the SBC pump now as well.

I see there is a SBC damper hose for some W211 models etc.
is there such a SBC damper hose for a 2005 SL500, just to quieten the noise a bit
i don't care if it doesn't not totally elininate it.
