What did you do today on the R230...

What a year! Bought my SL55 first part of the year...then had ankle surgery, recovered from that, then had foot surgery. Been out of the car scene, not just here but on the Mopar forums too. Foot finally healed enough that I could finally work on the SL.

So...what I've done so far....

1- Replaced head unit with a Seicane unit.
2- Replaced aluminum trim for wood. May go to CF, but I always liked the wood look.
3- Had steering wheel rebuilt.
4- Found some Brabus 3 piece wheels, had to have rears rebuilt...wrong ET. Finally installed this week with new Bridgestone Pole Positions S04's
5- Finally got my Chinese STARS copy and laptop working. Had a SRS light on that I could not clear with my Foxwell. I accidently turned key on while airbag/wheel were off for the swap, and triggered the SRS light.
6- Had widows tinted yesterday with 3M tint
7- Resonators deleted yesterday as well. Best bang/sound for the buck!
8- Replaced sparkplugs, serpentine belts, oil change with Proper Mobil 1 and OEM oil filter
9- Replaced radiator, (crack at fitting)
10-Replaced SC oil
11- Added JBSpeed rear spoiler. Ordered in silver, but painted satin black, as well as some of the bumper trim. Like the contrast.
12- Replaced aftermarket grill with OEM grill.
13- Added AMG floor mats that match interior better
14- Installed smoked marker lights.

Still need to locate some inner fender trim that was missing. Previous owner had a front end accident, hence the different front end, but left a couple trim pieces off under the car.

Love the steering wheel. I think CF trim will look very nice.

what’s with the hanging v8 side emblems though?

When I got the car, PO had debadaged it. I put the V8 on that way to be a little different.

Beautiful !
now you can start upgrading the machine itself

I would add real AMG AFFALTERBACH Wheel Center Hub Caps buy the direct from MB and remove those fake brabus
buy the real not the fake non-relief chinese, they are ridiculous
every-time a specialist or a guy from the Dealership saw my car he touched them and said "wow, you got the real caps"

btw what is yours and state max authorized front tint ? the tint you got is really perfect

Hey PM....I think in California it's illegal to have any aftermarket tint. Factory tint is ok. I had 3M Color Safe 'Dark' installed. It's dark, next tint shade up was limo.

I think my caps are real. They are engraved. Got them from a guy in San Diego that does a lot of work with Brabus, and sells Brabus. I've seen fake ones...basically just a decal. But, I may look into the one you mentioned also.

As far as motor mods...kinda limited here in California because of all the smog regulations. Going to research pulley upgrades and tunes later today. Thanks!

Hi,

Congrats on the SL55! I'm on my second SL500, hoping to upgrade to an SL55 or SL600 soon.

What do you think of the Seicane unit? Do all of your steering wheel controls work as normal? Does it easily plug in (no cutting/splicing wires)? Does it use the factory amp?

Rob

I replaced the OEM amp. I took out the CD changer in that back storage behind driver seat, and installed an amp in that space. I changed door speakers, (2-way), and installed two small speaker boxes behind seats with 6x9 3-ways.

Sound is amazing! The 'cabin' area is not that big, and upgraded speakers fill the area very nicely. All my steering wheel controls work as they should, no issues with that.

Do we need to send the old arms in for a custom build?

I wonder why they don't offer them directly...is there really more demand for these in the W215 / W220 community than the R230?

You might maybe send them

I didn't

I have no idea if there are many R230 or W215 demands but I love it

Bought my sl55 about 10 days ago at a steal, loving it so far, but have already spent some $ making her how I want and making sure she operates as should

1- liquimoly 5-40 service, engine flush, ceratec, coolant change, 44k fuel system cleaner

2- power wash engine bay (was disgusting)

3- purchased Crank sensor, MAF, valve cover gaskets

4- purchase BCM

5- purchase BC racing coilovers (no sway bars yet, not taking risk with abc)

6- purchased 80mm pulley

7- race iq tune purchseed

8- PLM xl eat exchanger purchased

9- ftp long tube headers purchased to make fit from e55 to sl55!

I might be forgetting a couple things here and their, next after the mods are installed I would like to find a decent head unit to replace my old 04 one with!

Do you folks feel the engine flush is worth it? I know it’s only $10 for Liqui Moly on FCP Euro, but just curious to know folks’ experiences.

maybe just a placebo, but it can’t hurt for the $ and it has been proven through their testing

Finished up a cold air intake on my 09 SL65. Inspired by the Black Series layout but with 3" CF piping right up to the turbo inlets.

very nice
but with my 100 attempts to get the coldest air
the only place is in the front grille
that with a additional Water/methanol kit from weistec brings the best performance ever
I boost 34psi

Thanks! Both sides are ducted ram air from the low part of the bumper, I’ll try to get a few pics. Measured a touch cooler than the front grille area in front of the rad and condenser and no metal cutting. The only drawback so far is smaller filters than I’d like.

And yep on the meth! Running the alkycontrol meth kit with a Stewart E2512A pump and a Marston HE. IATs are no longer a problem!
