Oil Change

Looked around, but didn't find a thread.

What are you putting in these R230s? 5W-40 or 0W-40?

It's pretty hot where I'm at in Southern Cal / Arizona. I've been using the cheap Mobil 1 0W-40 in my E55 and it hasn't complained yet, but I was thinking of putting 5W-40 in the SL.

Nothing wrong with using Mobil 1 0W-40 in your SL550 as well.

Just about tried them all and lately I'm using Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40.

For the M156, switched to it after M1 0W-40 and enjoyed a quieter engine that stopped consuming any noticeable amount of oil. Only reason I shifted to Motul was because of very positive feedback specific to that engine.

For the M113K and my Bimmer, Leichtlauf 5W-40 is still my go-to.

I'm in Northern California, so bit cooler than your So Cal location, but I've been using Mobil1 0W-40 in all my MB cars and never had any issues.

In a hotter climate, you'd want to use something that has a higher viscosity, so something like 15W-50. The thing to remember, is that Mercedes recommends single weight SAE 30, which has a temp range of 0°C to 30°C. 0W-40 has a temp range of -30°C to 40°C, so well within the recommended spec.

Please show us where Mercedes recommends a single weight SAE 30 oil.

The way I see it, I'm sure MB is well aware that their vehicles will be in service in the hottest areas on the planet - from the Middle East to Arizona and California. I see no reason to second guess their recommendations.

Besides, 0w40 and 5w40 have the same high temperature viscosity rating (40), so it's not going to be any better for hot weather. The low temp viscosity rating is important for cold start-up, you want to be sure that the oil flows easily cold so that oil pressure comes up as quickly as possible to protect main, rod, and cam bearing surfaces. All modern engines are designed to use oil with very low cold viscosity for exactly this reason.

The only time I would use something like 15w50 in any kind of modern engine would be in a racing engine that's going to see extreme duty, and is going to be disassembled and rebuilt fairly regularly. I mean literally a professional racing scenario. Other than that, maybe if I was trying to keep a worn out 50 year old Chevy small block alive for a few more years.

0W40 is the only one for M1 in my area that stated “European formula”.

Program Details: https://www.fcpeuro.com/page/lifetime-guarantee

Basically, you:

1. Buy an item.
2. Use it up.
3. Buy a replacement of it.
4. Fill out an RMA form and send in the item purchased in Step 1.
5. Receive a refund for the item purchased in Step 3.

This works on parts, filters, lubricants and tools they sell. Sounds absurd, but it works and FCP continues to operate and grow.

The only exception to the program is something like a fuel system treatment that is fully consumed (i.e. no original item to exchange/send back).

The big issue with FCP Euro’s lifetime replacement is the cost to return the used items. Even the cheapest shipping is expensive, for example, given the weight of nine liters of oil or two rotors. I think that’s the reason many folks don’t take advantage. Still, pricing and product are competitive.

They're counting on slippage for the model to work.

I never ship anything to them. Generally have a reason to be in Boston a few times a year and coordinate those trips to include a stop at FCP on the way...usually with a trunk full of accumulated items to drop off.
