Mirror Triangle Trim Repair

If you have ever removed a door panel on an older R230, you know that odds are pretty good that something is getting broken in the process. On my red 2003, I had to pull both panels to fix the seat switches and broke both of the mirror trim triangles in the process. Today, I designed and printed some repair pieces to get them back on. I didn't like the idea of putting on another narrow strip back on that would be as fragile as the original, so I designed a piece that fits directly in the hole in the door instead of using the plastic insert. I used JB Quick epoxy to adhere the repair piece.

A good piece shown with the clip that fits in the door slot, shown with foam removed.

Broken tab

3D printed repair piece installed

Complete repair with foam reinstalled

I might set up a Shapeways shop with all of my little printed repairs, so people can order directly and I don't have to ship anything. I have done a couple of different posts for fixing the pushed in door mounted seat control that I see a lot, a set of three posts that hold the front of the wood door trim (very common issue), rear flap repair hinges, and I'm working on a couple of flap replacements. I have looked at the console latch, but I don't have a great fix that would be universal and easy to install. The other issue I have is the visor mirror flap hinges and that one is going to be difficult as well. Are there any other common problems that people have run into?

The plastic covers over the steel tube that flips the trunk lid backwards have a flimsy attachment. The screws and square plastic push pins that secure them easily chew through their slots.

Nice fix! There seem to be an ever increasing number of small plastic parts that are easiest to fix with a 3d printer.

Can you print and sell me on of these clips, please. Of course the tab broke and now I am in a fix. Your repair looks better and probably functions better than stock.
Thanks in advance. Go Big Red

Of course, he has already 3D printed one so reprinting one should not be a problem. Yes I'll pay, no freeloader here.

My bad, he did say he was going to start a internet store so we can get his 3d parts. Hopefully he responds to us. And you are right might want to get a couple of these for future use.

Ah, a much better design. I see how he did it - removed the white collar from the door frame and used the 3D printed piece to slot directly into the door.

I made mine out of aluminium. Far less elegant.

Couldn't get ahold of this guy so made one myself and included the .stl file for anyone who wants it. Made it so it snaps in perfectly and is adjusted 100% correctly.

Does this piece replace two original pieces, the one in the door and the one in the triangle?

Hello.
I actually just ordered an OEM trim piece online from a salvage SL and it arrived in like new condition. However, I'm having difficulty with how to install the new piece. I don't want to end up breaking the center clip holder like the piece I'm replacing. Any tips on how to install the new triangle?

Yes it fits on triangle where piece breaks off just have to epoxy it then insert the piece onto the door making sure the two protrusions on the bottom go in correctly and then snap it in. Check fitment first. The OEM has some grooves in a separate white piece not sure how it was supposed to work.

Is this white clip currently attached to your door, or to your trim piece?

If it's attached to your trim piece, you need to remove it from the trim piece and install it on the door first, then install the trim piece.

Thank you for the information on this. It's attached to the trim piece. I was thinking the part needed to be installed in the door first. However next question would be on how to remove it to install in the door without breaking the part its attached to.

Thank you

Do not try to pull the clip off the trim piece. With the white retainer clip at an angle, push the trim piece post through the clip. It does take a fair bit of effort. Like this -

Thank you very much for this information. I will go that route. My retainer clip is actually black as it came with the entire mirror triangle trim piece.
