My car has developed a problem shifting out of park after starting the car. I've tried getting off the brake and back on it, pressing harder on the brake and just waiting until it's ready to be shifted out of Park. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestions? I've had the car about six months and this is the only issue I've had with it so far.
This is a common problem for the R230 - the original park lock lever is made of plastic and is prone to failure. Once it completely fails it's much more difficult to replace, so you'll really want to get an upgraded metal lever and replace it as soon as possible.

Until you get it repaired, I'd recommend leaving the car in neutral and using the parking brake.
Thank you, I appreciate your help. Thanks for the link for the replacement part and the link for the removal of the shift lever. I will leave it in neutral until I can get the part and make the repair. Thanks for the advice, it was all very helpful.
Thank you for all your suggestions and help, I took your advice and started the car with the card and got it out of park and in neutral but could not turn the car off with the button. So I removed the card from the car and got the ignition key and started the car with it, shifted it to neutral and turned the car off but the key will not come out and is in the acc position with the radio and all on. Any suggestions on how to turn the car completely off so I can remove the key while in neutral?
Sorry, I don't know about that exactly, I'd seen others mention leaving it in neutral as a precaution. Haven't had to do it myself. Might just have to get the metal lever ordered and hope your luck holds out a little longer.
You can also just remove the plastic lever and not replace it, but then the car can be shifted out of park without depressing the brake pedal so it's a bit of a safety hazard. No cars had shifter interlock systems until about 1990, so it's your call as to exactly how hazardous this really is.
To remove the weak plastic lever you still have to remove the shifter just the same, so just removing doesn't save you any effort, it just saves you the cost and the wait time of the metal lever.

Thanks again for your time and suggestions. Guess I'll just leave it parked until I can get the metal replacement part and replace it then. Thanks again!
