AMG Front Brakes on a 2004 sl500
LOL I am not trying to make by sl500 look like am AMG model. However I am loving the size of the rotor with a 5 spoke wheel. Not to fail to mention the Caliper too. Is it possible to make this modification and what is involved in terms of parts new and used and dollar range for the mod. Thanks Gene

If you put on AMG brake calipers and rotors i think you will have to drill out the holes in the front spindles that bolts the calipers in place since i am pretty sure the AMG brake calipers use larger/thicker bolt
Or if you find a set of spindles from an AMG you can put on AMG front spindles as well

If you put on AMG brake rotors and brake calipers i suppose you will have to replace the dust shields for AMG dust shields since the rotors are taller. Not much extra work if you replace the rotors
If i was going to replace the brake rotors for AMG rotors i would ot cuut the dust shields i would rather replace the dust shields with AMG shields.
I did a quick search on the net for AMG brake rotors for a 2004 Mercedes SL 55 AMG, R230 and came up with Brembo brake rotors front which is 390 mm diameter (Just because i like Brembo brake parts)
Below is a link to Mercedes SL AMG, R230 here on the forum:

You better read this thread to be sure of the diameter

Yeah, from what I've seen there's two different "big brake" packages. Standard SL55 and SL600 brakes have big steel rotors, vented and cross-drilled. Optional are carbon-ceramic rotors.
If you're upgrading just because it looks cool, you're definitely going to want the steel rotors because the price on the carbon-ceramics will make you cry.
I don't know if SL65s came with carbon-ceramic standard, or if it was optional. All the SL65s I've seen have the carbon-ceramic, but that may be because most of the buyers that were springing $150K or more just said "yeah, I want everything".
Pretty sure both the big brake packages use the same calipers, 8 piston in the front, 4 piston in the rear. SL600 calipers have "Mercedes- Benz" on them rather than "AMG".
