Angry Buyer Beware Land Auto Dismantling Hesperia CA

Buyer Beware Land Auto Dismantling Hesperia CA

I spent $600 on a salvaged PSE from Land Auto Dismantling, Hesperia, CA. I told then my car is partially dismantled, and driven less than 100 miles since I installed their dying PSE; and the PSE only worked for a few dozen cycles. It is past 30 days, so they will refund me nothing. Buyer beware.

I told Gene that I switched the good PSE from my 2003 SL500 to the 2004 SL500 where their defective PSE was installed, and my door locks worked perfectly. Therefore, Land Auto Dismantling sold me a dying old salvaged PSE. Now, Gene will not answer my phone calls, answer my email, or let me speak with his son the owner.
When I originally contacted them about the PSE on ebay, Gene convinced me to buy from them outside of ebay. He assured me that he would refund me on a problem with his salvaged product.

Well if that was the deal - 30 days warranty - then surely that's fair enough?

Have you considered repairing the old pump? There are repair kits out there.

Gene said he would take care of me if the salvaged part died. At Gene's request, that convinced me to buy this part outside of ebay. He mentioned nothing about a warranty limitation. I spent about 20 hours dealing with this old failed salvaged part. The dealer charges about $150/hour. So, I have put about $3,000 labor into this deal. I pulled the PSE out of my 2003 SL500, installed it in my 2004 SL500, and the locks worked perfectly. So the salvaged PSE I had in the 2004 SL500 definitely failed. As is usual, the graphite impellor failed. I changed out the impellor and blades with new parts and got the salvaged PSE to work again after about $3,000 worth of labor. It is unreasonable for a $600 salvaged part to fail after just a few dozen cycles. I expect Gene to be a man of his word, and refund some, if not all of the $600. I don't think he will compensate me for the labor and cost of the impellor replacement.

I never was told about a 30 day only warranty until I asked Gene for a refund. When he convinced me to go off ebay, he said he would stand behind his parts, and refund for faulty ones. Per his instructions I paid by paypal. I had never seen the image posted on this thread until it was posted here. See my actual receipt attached. There is no warranty on it. I only have Gene's word that he will refund faulty parts. I expect him to be a man of his word, and refund $600 or less.

I guess in this thread you forgot the part about attempting to return the part after 30 days? At the least, moving forward , you and others know the warranty from these people.

When buying a used same age part that is known to fail, the probability that it will fail for the buyer is very high.

They have their warranty very clearly on their website, maybe you can buy a rebuild kit for that one and rebuild it and sell it as a used one. Make sure you give a 1 year warranty.

Gene and I never discussed a warranty. We only discussed the deal. I was never was told about the website warranty before he sold me the salvaged PSE. He did say he would refund a faulty part. I told Gene after it had failed, I sold the original PSE for scrap, I would try to repair this one, and requested a refund. We never discussed returning the PSE.

I'm with the vendor.

It's not right to flame them for simply dealing within their stated terms. 30 days is 30 days.

30 day warranty

It’s sad. I guess the days of lifetime warranties on used parts are gone.

I was never shown or discussed the 30 day warranty limitation until I asked for a refund. Gene convinced me over the telephone to process the order through him off of ebay. Therefore, I did not get ebay's buyer protection guarantee. You can see that my receipt does not state a 30 day warranty. Gene just verbally assured me that he would refund faulty parts. $600 is way too much money to pay for an item that went bad within a couple of dozen cycles.

$600 is way too much to pay for a used part that is just as old or older than the part that you replaced it with. Used parts are a gamble, especially considering these particular parts are prone to failure in these cars.

Realistically what eBay is doing with the money back guarantee is driving used part prices sky high, or making sellers not sell used parts which is doing the same thing.

Unfortunately the seller has no way of understanding how long that particular part is going to last. I think 30 days is fair for a used part, but blame people who think a used part is going to last longer than the worn out one they are replacing it with.

I used to sell lots of good used parts on eBay, but now the buyer can complain about anything, and I am out shipping to them and back. I just throw the parts out now, it’s not worth the hassle, and I can only give a guarantee that the part will work, not for how long on an 18 year or older part that wasn’t designed well in the first place.

I agree you overpaid for a used part, but I believe they still sell these new, they are just more expensive. What expectation do you have for the longevity of this used 18 year old part?

This car is partially dismantled, and under extensive restoration. It was driven less than 100 miles. An honorable seller should be good to his word and provide some refund now, since the seller did not state it was sold only with a 30 day warranty, with no mileage provision.

Not a great tactic from the vendor. But that's why I buy everything from eBay. Their buyer protection is outstanding.

30 day warranty and eBay

Land Auto Dismantling’s eBay store plainly states that there are no returns but purchases are covered by eBay’s Money Back Guarantee.
But eBay’s guarantee is only good for 30 days.
Land Auto Dismantling’s website also plainly states that they give a 30 day warranty.
Are you complaining that they should be responsible for you not doing your due diligence before making a purchase?

When a businessman says he will refund faulty parts, I think his word is good.

You can make a claim on eBay up to six months later. Perhaps this doesn't apply to second hand car parts though.

New pumps from the discounters run about $850 with shipping. Probably a better deal than a 20 year old used pump for $600. Some used R230 parts are just priced way too high.

Remind me, when were those days? (I don't remember seeing them!)

Ahem, Ebay's policy on conducting Ebay initiated transactions outside of EBay are very explicit. It is strictly prohibited and situations like this is a huge part of the reason why. It removes the ability of a giant platform like Ebay ability to provide protections to both the buyer and seller as well as the credibility of it's platform. It's no different than walking into Safeway and having a clerk saying meet me at the back door and I can sell you steaks for $5, then 2 days later you are in the ER with food poisoning due to eating unrefrigerated old meat.
