I always left mine connected using a CTEK charger and had no problems. Others may disagree.

By the way, do they always yell a lot in Louisiana?

Leave it connected. I have my C-Tec (MBZ) charger wired so I can plug it in without removing panels. I trickle charge it when it's perked in the garage. Works great that way.

I would strongly recommend CTEK as they make the Mercedes-branded chargers. The MXS 5.0 is under $100. Please don't go cheap. Your car may be old, but it is still a highly sophisticated piece of electronics.

It's worth checking the health of the front (starter) battery from time to time. When they go out, it is sudden and without warning, like stopping for gas and then the car doesn't start. The rear battery is not used as backup for the starter battery.
