New touchscreen head unit in 2004

First thing I did when I bought the car last week!

I was surprised how easily it all came apart and went back together.
What’s the old unit and cd player worth?

Hey there Fezz, might you share the details of the Head Unit that was installed?

Head unit

This is the one I installed. It came with everything you need. Even a back up cam.
it is more expensive than others I saw but had the best reviews.
Be careful chosing one though. Make sure to look at the pictures of which radio it fits. There are multiple head units in our cars that look the same at first glance but there are slight differences.

I upgraded mine last year to a Kenwood unit and it completely modernized my car.

I'm also curious on the value of the old unit but I suspect it's not much.

I put mine on ebay asking for $90 and got no interest at all. Very little demand as many simply update to a modern unit.

My 2007 SL550 had a Pioneer, push a button it would fold out to show a slot to insert CDs, and had a SD card too, plus backup camera!

I've got a Pioneer head unit in my car, an AVIC-7000 as I recall. The face folds down for access to the CD and SD card slots. This allows the screen to be a bit larger. Navigation/map and firmware updates are done via USB port on the back, which I plugged an extension cable in to and routed into the glove box.

This is my install, which I fully documented in this thread:
https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-...004-sl600.html

IIRC, the bezel is for 2005+ R230 models, but I wanted the ability to remove/replace the head unit without having to remove the "wood" console insert. So I just cut the wood insert and cover the mounting screws with black foam.
Everything still works perfectly and it wirelessly connects to my iPhone in seconds. Well, almost perfectly - I had to procure a microphone and it is marginal. I did not try to use the MB microphone, but now that I know what cable it is under the dash, I might try it soon. The steering wheel buttons control the volume, I needed an additional adapter for that.

From the picture, it appears it came with the adapter to run the fiber optic system from the simple line/speaker output from the unit. Is that correct.
BTW, R230 2003 and 2004 need a "D2B" adapter to run the fiber optic. 2005+ models need a "MOST" converter.

Yes, it came with the fiber decoder and the clips to couple the fiber lines together for the cd, phone, and voice module.
After I got mine to give me sound I went back and removed a bunch of the unused fiber so that I just have 1 set going from the unit to the factory amp.

I completely yanked the Command system (Bose) and went full high end mods in 2017 My few years as a custom stereo installer in my 20’s allowed me to this install myself over 2 months of weekends. Full interior removal to get all my signal lines, speaker wires and sound insulation in. My Halo is reminiscent of today’s floating “iPad” touch screen look. My most proud accomplishment was retaining the drink holders.
