Lightbulb KEY STUCK IN IGNITION & shift shows PARK

So bizarre situation I came home and parked and turned off my 2007 SL550 and the key would not turn all the way to position zero (0)
and therefore the key won't release from the ignition switch lock.
If you can't remove the key the car won't lock and turn off which would lead to dead batteries.
BIG PROBLEM !
So not wanting to deal with it last night, I just disconnected both batteries and left the key in it.
Today I dug into the problem and I think it is the dreaded plastic gear clip that is known to fail leaving people stuck in PARK
I was locked out of being able to fully engage PARK
There is a quick fix if you get into this jam there is this cable of a manual linkage that runs from the front of the selector module to the ignition
key slot and it has a release for the key SEE PIC of cable

To access this you need to follow the first half of this YouTube

Once you can reach the front of the transmission module rotate this 90 degrees and it will come out with a tug
Now push the plunger of the end that was in the transmission and WHILE holding it in rotate your key to position Zero (0) and remove it
NOTE: Car won't know it is in PARK even though the red led shows P so you will have to shift to N and then start car.

Hope it helps as there was no clear information ANYWHERE to be found on this odd situation

Hi, I thought the plastic tab issue got you stuck in Park. Does it also lock you out of Park?

Or is the cracked solder optocouplers that confuse the shifter into not knowing what gear it is in?

Yeah I would need to take a shifter apart again, but if memory serves, the troublesome plastic shift lever is not related to the interlock cable. IIRC the pin on the interlock cable rides directly on a solid metal part of the shifter shaft.
This problem sounds like the interlock cable came loose at the shifter; its just a quarter turn to lock/unlock it.

Are the brake lights working?

I haven’t driven an R230 in awhile but my CLK500 shows gear position in the speedo. It would be interesting to know what gear the car thinks it is in.

On the dashboard it shows R but the shift selector is illuminated P and the drivetrain is locked and the car won't roll away

Might want to have a look at those solder joints.
