Keyless Go problem

Purchased a 2007 SL550 back in May and quickly fixed a couple of minor annoyances. A bigger annoyance, however, is the non-functional Keyless Go, which has me stymied. The key works well for locking and unlocking and starts the car when inserted, but the start button on the shift lever does nothing. Is there a common trouble-shooting routine for such a problem?

Any suggestion or advice will be welcomed.

Thanks.

There is a fuse somewhere, start there.

Do you know for a fact that the key you have used to work with KLG?

It is possible that the key itself isn’t really KLG.

If you pull the PCB out of the key, from pix we can tell you. NKLG keys have just one copper wound inductor. KLG keys have 2 or 3 and much more crowded circuitboard. Early KLG required use of a card with the key. By 2007 should be just a key. (Oval panic button)

If panic button is a triangle, those don’t come apart if OEM.

If you only have 1 key, might be time to find a clever locksmith who can make a KLG 2nd key.

Thanks for your response. The key seems to be the most important part of this process, so I'll start there and see where that takes me.

My 2005 keyless go keys only have one battery. Non Keyless go keys typically have two batteries inside.

It may be a new key that was programmed to the vehicle. The keys come programmed when ordered for DAS and EIS, but not KeylessGo, that part needs to be done by the dealer. I had the same issue after buying a car with a new spare remote the dealer ordered, but did not program.

If you have a chrome key with triangular panic button it was made 2008 or later. In 2005 they were black plastic keys.

The MB keys with triangle panic button have 1 battery. The MB keys with oval panic button have 2 batteries. If 3rd party, all bets are off.

Key is confirmed, now checking fuses. Is there a document that identifies the number and location of Keyless Go related fuses?

What does this mean? You pulled the PCB out and verified multiple copper coils?

You are just flying blind without diagnostics. It could need key tracks reprogrammed, have a bad KG module, or a number of other things. Very rare to see a used R230 with 2 keyless go keys. Why do you think that they are keyless go keys?

Counted multiple coil windings then took it to the dealer's parts department for confirmation. Only one of the two keys that I have is original - no surprise there.

I recognize that the cause of the problem could be any number of things, including the after-market remote start/gate opener system installed. Trying to eliminate one problem at a time.

Ok, those are the sort of details that should have been in first post.

1. You have 2 keys, neither working with KLG. Apparently they look different?
2. Someone added a “remote start and gate opener” feature. Do you know brand? There are about a million ways that could cause issues.

In the UK we do not have a PANIC button on the key fob

Xentry/das would point to your problem. As mentioned it can be key programming. It could also be the keyless go antennas or a module itself. I’m assuming no keyless doorhandles work either? Das with developer would get you through the repair in my opinion. When I went through something similar on an E 55 it was determined that the keys were not keyless go keys so I had to get a new key and after that I was able to do all of the repair diagnostics. In my case, all modules were working.
