Hi folks, when you stop in my car I just press P and she goes into park,
when I want to pull away I just put into D, and the parking brake releases
and I pull away. So what's the handle for where on my old SL it released
the parking brake.

It's an electronic parking brake on your left side. Push it to engage, pull it to disengage. It is marked with a big P and is just under the light control.

If you push the button with P next to the gear selector does it do the same job as pushing the park brake handle

No, it just puts the transmission into park. It does not set the parking brake.
