More Spy Shots of Next-Generation Mercedes-Benz SL
At this point, Mercedes seems to be merely flaunting the next-generation SL around for advertising, and there is no actual testing going on. But there are still revelations to be had.

Has to be an improvement on the current generation's lines... Sorry current SL owners - still a winner in almost every other area but the designers must have been stoned.

Agreed. But I must have gotten used to the front-end by now The car blends in design-wise quite nicely with our S & M Class.
Interestingly, the SL has a lot of good looking design elements and now that I have lowered the car and widened the stance, the car looks 1000 times better than our R230 SL, which just looks dated.
Even the facelift only fixes the front-end, nothing else. The rear bumper gets the new exhaust treatment and a slight redesign while the headlights/grill/bumper appears to be more of a AMG GTS variety (big thumbs up).
Why are they sticking with the similar rear end design of the current generation?? Doesn't look like it would be a cohesive design with the new front. I'd love to be proven wrong when the camo is actually shed.

There is no camo on the rear and I heard that the rear stays pretty much as is. Not sure what is not cohesive here either. The tail lights are completely in line with the SL's design line.
Keep in mind that the front-end is softened due to the harsh complaints about the SL's edgy (and ugly) front-end not fitting the softer rear. The rear gets a little softer yet via it's bumper update.
I do think that the front-end needed a redesign as the headlights were not properly proportioned and neither was the grille.
This is a facelift after all, not a redesign or new body...

Exactly - the front end is where Mercedes were copping a lot of flak and it is encouraging to note this is where they are concentrating their facelift changes.

I know there's no camo on the rear lights. My comment was around being unsure whether the new front (camo'ed, but we know the new/current design language) and the mostly un-revised tail lights would be a cohesive design. I, for one, hope it works out well. I've always had a soft spot for the SL up until the current version.

Still have a soft spot for the SL as well
What's funny is that standing in front of the car and looking the hood and front end, the car looks absolutely spectacular.
It's only when you look at frontal pics at a distance, the headlights (and grill on the SL550 diminish it). The SL63 front clip which features a smaller grill and more defined bumper line looks much better, even more so with the Euro headlights (see ITC's conversion).
From all other angles, I like the looks of the
R231 better than the older models now. Plus the SL550 is quicker stock than our old SL55 & SL600TT
Correct. Speed limit assist is ancient news but it never introduced in the U.S. U till the 2016 models. Just like the navigation in the U.S. Very limited compared to the Euro maps
