Where Did You Drive Your SL Time Capsule Today....

I live is S.E. Texas at the junction of three distinct geographic regions. East Texas Piney Woods, Post Oak Savannah and Coastal Prairies. This morning I drove south into the Coastal Prairie to say hello to a old friend in Egypt, Texas. The coastal prairie is roughly 100 miles wide and 800 miles long following the Gulf Coast waters inland. My area of the Coastal Prairie is geographically pretty boring but economically a power house here in Texas. Oil ,natural gas, cattle, rice, cotton and sorghum are produced in huge amounts. Most farms are 4-5 thousand acres. The land is almost flat except for a occasional rise or hill which may encompass hundreds of acres which indicates a salt dome somewhere underground. Lots of trees but because of the millions of acres in agricultural production they are mostly relegated to fence rows or around modest farm houses.

Harvest season is at full swing right now and I drove through tens of thousands of acres of rice and cotton being harvested 24 hours a day. County roads lined up with hundreds of Semi trucks hauling rice to local dryers and flat beds loaded with cotton bales the size of pick up trucks weighing 20 thousand pounds. What a sight to see!
Every time I use a Q-Tip, put on a pair of socks, underwear, jeans, shirt or slip into my comfy bed sheets at night I envision what I have seen in these fields over the years.
Where did you ride today in your SL? We want to hear.......

Well, I did not take photos, but I did about 200 miles today on the Natchez Trace. Stopped a Shaffer's BBQ in Mount Pleasant TN, awesome brisket, and yes he moved here from Texas. Clear blue sky, mid 70's, top down, Tom Scott on the audio among others, sport for chassis and tranny. What a fun day! And as Arthur said, 'Isn't fun the best thing to have?' Still miss Dudley Moore.

Drove south on US 11 from Hagerstown, turned west on WV 9 through Berkeley Springs, WV to Paw Paw, WV. Fall colors are approaching the peak. Turned north across the Potomac River to Cumberland, MD where we picked up I68. Stopped in Hancock, MD for a nice walk on the Western MD Rail Trail. Then I70 back to Hagerstown. About a 3.5 hr drive, little traffic, lots of twisties and great weather. Love this car.

This morning, my wife and I drove just a few minutes from our home, to Crystal Cove State Beach. Temp was high 60’s and it was gorgeous! We went for a walk along the dunes, then down in the sand, where we played tag with the waves. We put up with so much crap to live in this idiotic state, places like this being right down the road, go a long way in easing the pain.

I did quite the opposite today - there was a large snowstorm today, so that seems to be the end of the fall for us Canadians. I stored my SL in my garage and I will be soon putting on the cover and plugging in the battery tender. I am looking forward for those sweet, sweet cold starts, though!

Today, I took a drive to an area I frequent, up in the winding roads around Pelican Hill in Newport Coast. It was a beautiful, sunny day with temps in the mid 60’s. I know, you’ve all seen the car before, but I like posting new ones, so here are a few.

Just returned from a few days in Western North Carolina and East Tennessee, driving the mountains and visiting friends in Asheville. Stayed off of the interstates as much as possible, taking US 64 from Tennessee over into North Carolina. Through Cashiers, Highlands, Lake Toxaway, some really good roads, and relatively little in the way of traffic. No trucks to speak of, and plenty of diversions on the roadside. Great restaurants and shops in downtown Asheville, along with the Biltmore Village area. Got up on the Blue Ridge Parkway for the afternoon; a bit slow for my taste, however a great road with some spectacular views.

Planning to head to Vicksburg MS next month, and then back through Alabama, stay tuned. I really do enjoy those types of drives in the Time Capsule! Exactly the reason that it is in the garage! Now about that luggage . . . . . come on Santa!

Took Cardinal for a really nice countryside, top-dropped cruise yesterday, here, where I reside in central NC! It was a very pleasant and sunny 71 degrees. So glad I did, as it rained most of today!

It was cold and raining last week and even rained a bit yesterday. Today, however, after a bit of wind in the morning, the skies were bright blue and the temp gauge in my SL read 77, as my wife and I drove through Laguna Canyon, with the top down. Along Pacific Coast Highway it was 73 and the ocean looked like we were in Hawaii! They say it will actually get warmer through the weekend and should be “picture postcard” perfect for the Rose Parade & Rose Bowl tomorrow. Happy New Year!

My SL Has been at the dealership for 6 days now for a air bag recall and they keep telling me the overnight mail service still hasn’t delivered the needed parts. Nothing stupid about having a recall and then not having the parts here in the U.S.........

Utopia, yours is a 2019, as is mine, but I have heard nothing about a recall. Did you get a notice in the mail or??

Thank you for posting the recall info. My car was produced a few months after that period.

Yesterday I drove to work. Downtown Seattle. Not much traffic, easy underground parking. Little mizzle, little fog. And then an early drive home to the Eastside. A little heavy throttle action while merging, some amazing Distronic Plus traffic navigation, and a tight little twisty road experience on the way home.

While not a long or storied road trip - it exemplifies why this is my favorite steed. No road trip is boring in an SL.

Well, it is “Super Tuesday” here in California and it was also 80 degrees, so I drove my SL to deposit our ballots in the bin box.

Just back from an 1,800 mile run to Florida for a couple of weeks. Will post 'dirty pictures' tomorrow. Damn this is just a spectacular vehicle to cover distance at speed in comfort. Most special.

Today I drove my time capsule to Sebring FL. Let me begin by stating that while I do enjoy driving, interstate highways do not hold much appeal. So I plot my trips to include the maximum 'off-interstate' travel that I can; with a focus on divided four lane highways through rural areas, with the fewest small towns on the route. That is what I did on my recent jaunt to Florida, from Tennessee, through Alabama and down into Florida. Just a bit over 1800 miles; averaged 68 mph with 26 mpg on one leg of the trip, about 350 miles. I continue to marvel at the R231 SL, it is just such a competent performer loafing along at 65 mph, or loafing along at 90 mph; all with such ease. IMO it is a perfect GT cruiser, allowing for top down driving, or coupe comfort, drivers choice. The vehicle receives approving nods and thumbs up in the Sebring paddock, and the occasional 'wow' at some of the rural 'fillin' stations'; quite simply delivering what I believe MB originally envisioned for the SL. As owners, we can poke holes in the theory, but the ability of this automobile to define what a GT should be is appreciated from a user perspective. The more I take these 'trips' the more I enjoy the experience. Next up, Keeneland in a couple of weeks to see the ponies run! Drive on!
