(Miniature) Model Upgrade

The Maisto 1/18th scale model of an SL in a metallic white that I obtained for $45 via Amazon was much appreciated. The detail on the dash was particularly impressive, but I was disappointed with the ugly, boring black interior of the model. So I decided on a "stay-at-home" project -- paint the interior to reflect the Ginger Beige/Espresso Brown Nappa Leather on my SL550.

Disassembly of the model was not easy. The biggest challenge was disconnecting the steering column from the tie rod. Prying the door panels off the doors and removing the dash assembly were also difficult but thankfully I managed everything without breaking any of the plastic parts.

So here are some before and after photos. I think you'll appreciate the detail on the instrument panel. The tach, speedometer and map display are plastic inserts but buttons on the number pad, steering wheel and temperature controls are painted. Note the door handles and the side mirrors. The acrylic paint is from Tamiya Color, XF-10 and XF-57 (via Amazon.)

I have a model of almost all of the special vehicles that I have owned and I am pleased to have a model of an SL that pretty accurately reflects my ride. See what you think...

For sure. Thanks all for your compliments and encouragement. I'm really glad to have this miniature. Of all the great rides I've had, this SL550 is my absolute favorite. My wife even loves it! How great is that?

I agree about the wife comment as mine would not ride in my C7 Corvette but she loves the SL. Can't honestly say it is my favorite car but it is close. If it stays reliable I will trade in a couple years for another one that is about 3-4 years newer.

Mine was the same. I had the R172 SLK 350 in Australia which we used for a lot of touring. We moved to the UK and my wife wanted (for touring in Europe) something with

1) a bigger boot
2) more room in front for her handbag and coat
3) a softer ride

She thought I'd buy a station wagon (estate car?)........

SL ticked all the boxes and I got a thumbs up.
