Insurance question. 2013 SL550

Been with Geico for years and I keep threatening to leave but then sometimes its not greener on the other side. Have all the discounts possible(plus am forced to take every year an online defensive driving test to supposedly save money) but since I sold another car recently they now say I can't claim their "Multiple auto discounts" plus they keep using their get out of jail card, which is I have accident forgiveness in the policy. Anyway, just checking if I can do much better than $628.00 per 6 months.(and rising the next six months no doubt). One small claim with them in 20 years. As possibly with some of us, only doing about 4 thousand miles a year and under 8K before Covid. Any suggestions or just cough up and leave well alone as its a reasonable deal or there about's and not worth the bother? Thx.

I
I have Progressive and when I traded my 2014E350 cabriolet for my 2013 SL550 my insurance went DOWN $100 a year. Now, I have bundled my home and auto and have four cars - mine, my wife's 2017 GLC300 and my two daughter's cars: a 2019 Mazda CX-30 and a2010 Ford Edge and the total for all four cars is about $3,200. I think that's pretty good with two teenage drivers.

I also have Geico, and have never taken or heard of such a test. Did you get a bunch of speeding tickets, or what was the circumstance around doing it the first time (and thereafter)?

I questioned them about it and have now taken it three times(I'm 68) and pay about $15.00-$19.00 for the test(takes 5-8 boring hours at least) and was told that it saves me money by taking it by offering a discount of approx $60.00 every 6 months??? But still like to know if what I'm paying is too much or notHaven't had a speeding ticket in about 15 years!!

Ah, yeah I looked it up and it's only for drivers over 50 (at least in my state).

I'd recommend trying one of the insurance aggregators, like maybe https://www.insurance.com/auto-insurance.aspx or https://www.thezebra.com/car-insurance-quotes/

That seems high. I have Amica, and 3 cars ('16 SL400, '19 Volvo XC60, '21 Cadillac XT4) and pay $2300 for a year for my wife and I as drivers. We are in our 60's. Very happy with Amica's responses when I've had to file a claim.

I'm paying under $500 for 6 months for two drivers with State Farm. That's after discounts for bundling several other policies - cars, home, liability etc...

Shopping around is a good idea. There are so many variables to consider - coverage, deductible, age, location, driving record, mileage, service etc. The cheapest I ever found was AllState, but when it came to a claim you were completely on your own. Progressive were more expensive but their service was first class.

Good Luck
Gary

FWIW, I think we used to pay around $350/6 months with Progressive (no deductive on glass/$500 on the rest. Moving to the AMG GTC stayed roughly the same. Long-time customer, multiple cars but I wouldn't use them for house, etc.

After over 40+ years with USAA, I shopped around and switched to Erie for auto, home and an umbrella liability. I'm saving almost $800/yr and with more coverage. I never thought I could do better than USAA. I hope Erie's claim service is as good as USAA if I have to use it.

I'm of the opinion that since the insurance companies raise rates basically every year, you should shop around every year.

We have four cars insured through Erie and two with Hagerty. We have received top notch service from both as well as our local agent, and Erie saved us about $900 over our prior auto coverage with Nationwide. Our driving records for last 5+ years is clean. We also have our homeowners and umbrella policies with Erie.

It may make sense to share what one is paying for their vehicle instead of stating what the perceived savings are. Along with coverage details it may help to compare apples to apples and make a move if worthwhile

Questions is your car a daily driver or occasional with another car as a daily? My MB SL 550-‘08 cost me about 1/2 of what my previous policy in MASSACHUSETTS cost me. I have se Hagerty collectors insurance with agreed value. Also in Maine, if it was a daily it would be about the same as before. The occasional use and agreed value made the savings possible.

Update. After 24 years with Geico, one small claim 18 years ago, no tickets(came back from breakfast to see someone had banged into the side door) I just had enough and they wouldn't budge. I'm very loyal normally but after losing my multiple discount(sold the vette) they actually increased my rate to $680.00 for six months(and they bloody well make me take a defensive test every 2 years or else its increases by another $70.00) I decided to look around. So State Farm came up with $445.00. I thought wow, that's a big saving particularly as I had the barest of coverage with Geico 10/20 thousand plus no medical coverage of 10K per person.

I then checked with my own Agent who insures my home and she came back with $379.00 with Progressive!! 100/300K. Plus if you pay the whole lot, $369.00!! WTF Geico, you are robbing me blind. And now it gets more interesting. I wrote back to her and said, "Beam me up Scotty" sounds great, where do I sign up? She wrote back an automated reply that they were closed for Easter and back on the 6th of April. My insurance with Geico was only up to the 3rd and had an important trip on the 5th. What to do? Rang Progressive up as had the full quote with all the individual amounts I was being charged and since I knew this was a quote from them, told their agent the situation and surely they had this estimate/quote in their system. He said they didn't and would have to start again with him with all the details. Now whilst waiting to speak to this agent, I went online to their own website and had no idea that you could actually do this all yourself and noticed that some of the charges(coverage) my agent had quoted were totally different than what was on their website and wondered why. I asked him and he was extremely vague but got the feeling that not only does the agent wack on some extra amounts but gets a commission from them at the same time

I thanked him and put the phone down as I said I would further investigate. Back to their website and withing 10 minutes plus a phone call to customer service to clarify something which cost me an extra $3.00, I registered, paid, printed out my Insurance cards and have the best coverage I have ever had for the princely sum of $314.00. What!!!! This is a huge saving. Happy Days

Insurance rates vary greatly based on location, use of the vehicle, driving record, claims record, credit score and probably a number of other factors. I assumed for years that I was getting the best possible rates from USAA given that I have a good driving record, high credit scores, etc. However, I now subscribe to the "shop around every couple years club". I just checked again and I am saving almost $1000/yr on my car insurance and about $400 on my homeowners by switching to Erie. I also have some additional coverage that I did not have with USAA. That said, I will be shopping around in about a year just to confirm that I am still getting the lowest possible cost. Loyalty is nice but I have time to shop around and that is what I will be doing.

Congrats! Great move. Progressive direct cuts out the mark-up for agents. We literally had the same discussion on the M8/8Series forums where insurances charge up to $4k a year for some.
Here is what a fellow member said:
"Yes, thanks to that thread I went from $2500 every 6 months with Allstate for my wife's 2017 X5 and my 2020 M850i ($129K MSRP) to $710 with Progressive"

Point is that its always good to check as rmorin49 said. Loyalty these days just means highest rates...

When my daughter moved from NY to FL her insurance with GEICO doubled she was paying 860 annually for a Grand Cherokee and it went 1600 I finally got her switched to progressive and her policy went back to about $800
