2017 SL400
Cool SL231 roof noises

I have a 2017 SL400 (450 in NA), when the roof is closed it makes a lot of creaking noises as though the roof is not ridged enough. Is this an easy fix. Is there adjustment I can make or do I have to take it to a dealer?
I cannot find anything on YouTube for the R231. Your help would be much appreciated

Easiest thing to try is clean the seals and apply some rubber protection/lubricant. Mercedes makes a lube for convertible seals, part # 0009893660.
I use Gummi Pflege regularly, it may work for you too. There are also some 3M products. Mercedes rubber seals have been know to squeak/creak when rubber is dry or dirty.
It’s worth a shot, cheap&easy execution….

Good Luck

Agree - I use Gummi Pflege on the window rubbers regularly as well. Good Luck, Steve

I have experienced the same issue on my 2013 SL. I have tried several fixes but never had any luck until I removed the headliner and everything was silent while going over bumps, etc. I have tried using a foam door/window insulator around the areas where I think the creaking is coming from and it seems to always work for a few days then back to the creaking sounds. Very annoying. I truly believe those creaking sounds are coming from where the headliner touches or meets up with some of the roof and it's components. Hopefully we can solve this issue without having to remove the roof headliner to accomplish silence.

Did you try using the Mercedes lubricant made for convertible top seals? It's a small, yet expensive tube but it works magic on seals. I would shy away from any other typical rubber detailer, and stick with the OEM version.

I had the same problem. I bought a tube of Krytox It's expensive but good. I cleaned all the seals and treated them with it and the noises stopped. It also cured a very slight leak as well. A little goes a long way and It's good for years before re application.

Yup, that is the same product I mentioned above PN: 0009893660. Mercedes just repackages it.
Not sure it's cheaper no matter where you buy it....

$40 for a tiny bottle. 😳

I feel like that lube should be used when I bend over!

Have you tried silicone o-ring lube? Or teflon lube? They claim to be safe on all rubbers.

It may be a small bottle but it goes very far if you follow instructions properly. It also lasts a long time.

That's terrible advice, stick with the product designed to do the job- even if it costs more.

Just curious, but why do you say that? Have you tried it? Is there information elsewhere that says it's not a good idea?

I would never try that. It will lead to creaking and dirt buildup as evidences by many posts over the years. That's why MB, Volkswagen and other manufacturers recommend using this...
