Used r231 ABC strut?

Has anyone installed a used ABC strut on their MB? Any issues using a use strut?
Worried about contamination in the strut. Can I flush it before the install?

Why are you using a used critical part? If you eff up your ABC system with a contaminated part, you will spend MUCH more money and time to fix it. This is not a time to be cheap.

Just get one from Arnott and they buy back the old one.

Search around. You can find them cheaper through a reseller.

Unfortunately, Those are coil overs, NOT ABC Struts. I haven’t seen refurb ABC struts for R231 yet….

Well, darn it! Still, my point applies. Not sure why the OP was considering used ABC struts.

I don't know where you are (you should update your profile) and I don't know which strut you are looking to replace, but here's one from a Mercedes dealer for $2400.

231-320-11-13-80 - Suspension Strut 2013-2020 Mercedes-Benz | Mercedes-Benz USA Parts (mbusa.com)

Still, $2400 is a lot. Well good luck with whatever you do.

As I’m sure you know, it’s always a gamble with used parts. You risk bolting everything up and bleeding, only to find a few days later, the part is defective or leaking. If it’s your car it’s not as much of an issue as a customer car. But still a pain in the A$$. If this is a car for resale, that’s an entirely different matter I guess….

When it makes sense, I always try to find parts where I can either physically see the car or the wreckers have kept accurate records of VIN/mileage (assuming they’re honest 😀 )
That being said, you’re going to bleed/rodeo the system anyways. I would compress the strut to get as much of the old oil out, and inspect it’s condition.

Good Luck.

Gamblin on a strut

Fully aware crconsulting, but good knowledgable advice is always welcome. I plan on giving the strut a thorough inspection and flush. I'm a licensed auto tech with a specialty in automatic transmissions (hydraulics and valve bodies) so I do know what I might be getting into but at the price of a new one in Canada being about $ 4000.00 including tax I'll chance it.
Will keep you posted......

It may be worth putting a call into Arnott and just asking them why they aren't offering rebuilt R231 ABC struts. Or, maybe they offer a rebuild service. That may help you decide, as well.

I'm just unfamiliar with the ABC system in the R231. I did have it in my R230 and would not have taken the chance. But those struts are in the price range of the used one you are considering.

That makes it easier, if there is a problem, at least you can exchange the part. All it will cost is your time. I would get at least a 90 day warranty or buy off eBay with a credit card.
I’ve used plenty of pre-owned parts when I had no choice or it made sense $$$ wise. But like I said above, on consumables such as this, try to find one with a mileage history.

Good Luck.
