Rotors and pads.

I just purchased a 2013 AMG SL63 for my wife, she loves it. There is a squeal when braking. I’m wondering where you guys are getting your pads and rotors from? Thanks.

front or rear?
if they are OEM they like to be “used” hard regularly. It could be a lot of other things though. Try re-bedding the pads with a few “abrupt” 60-0 stops and see if it improves.

Sometimes aftermarket pads make it worse….

Rears have two guide pins that should be properly greased, (be sure it’s hi-temp caliper grease) I’ve seen them come out pretty dry before….
If you’re doing the service yourself, check those aren’t bent or anything too. Along with making sure the stainless retaining clips are clean and undamaged.

Honestly, with that little mileage, the rotors are probably glazed a little from gentle driving habits, and need to be re-bedded if they’re that new. I believe those will be TRW pads (from the factory) which are a relatively hard semi metallic compound.

I’m going to guess they didn’t make noise when you first got the car right?

Correct, no squeal when I first drove it. Thanks for your info. I will pass it along to the mechanic checking the brakes.
cheers🍻

Pads and rotors may be a little tough to find. I got my rotors from fcpeuro.com and my pads from rockauto.com.

The pads I use and like a lot are:
DYNAMIC FRICTION 1600168800 {1600-1688-00} 5000 Euro Ceramic

Seems like for your car, there may be iron rotor and ceramic rotors. But here's the link.

Front: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...brake+pad,1684
Rear: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...brake+pad,1684

2006 CLS55 AMG Sold 2010 E550 Coupe totaled '13 SL550 current and loving it!
High performance brakes like you have on you SL63 tend to squeal and often need to be bedded in. As mentioned, find an open road and do a few hard 60-10mph stops. Then drive a bit without touching the brakes. That should eliminate the squealing.

Precisely as others have said. I too have a 2013 SL63 (welcome to the club, they are awesome machines!) and the brakes are simply oversized for “normal” driving. This car is my daily driver, so every couple of weeks or so of civilized commuter driving the brakes start squealing like banshees. Then I have to purposely drive like a hooligan and brake like mad a few times, at which point silence ensues. A couple of weeks later, rinse and repeat.

My conclusion is that normal driving causes a bit of glaze on these underutilized pads which needs to be purposely knocked off. Nothing really wrong with the brakes at all.

I’m just curious: For a non-AMG R231, what would one expect to pay for all new factory pads, discs & calipers?

Factory disks and pads, I would think one would expect to pay about $875 or so, per axle at the dealership.
Haven't looked at caliper availability lately, but can tell you a dealership ended up buying my used calipers because of supply chain issues....
I would think that would add about $500. per wheel (list price) so $2k + $1750 (roughly)
I would go to an independent and use Brembo rotors and pads to save some money vs. mercedes factory parts. Quality is comparable and should be cheaper.

Getting ready for an R232?

Thanks very much. As you may know, I put CCB on my 2019 SL450. I did it when the car only had about 1,000 miles on it. I still have all the parts that were taken off. Rotors, pads, calipers, etc. I'm thinking of selling them,
as they are just taking up space. Anyone out there looking for a nice, very near new set?

No. No R232 for me. Here in Newport Beach where I live, I have seen several running around already. Nice looking, but no longer the boulevard cruiser that I enjoy. A "removable" wind screen? Give me a break! And, I hate the "iPad" in my S580 and cannot even imagine one in direct sunlight. If and when I part with my "Mighty Mouse" SL, I won't be looking for another convertible.

Almost immediately after I bought my SL a friend and I removed the newly installed OEM pads and installed a set of Carbon Ceramic pads. We did not replace the rotors or calipers. New rotors were installed as part of the CPO process by the selling dealer. The new pads perform as well as the OEM pads with 90% less dust. They are Powerstop brand and I think I bought them from AutoAnything for less than $100. No issues after about 10,000 miles.

I'm curious what it cost to change to CCB?

The default price is well over $20k for the swap but a great deal will take it down to $16k or so.

Not for the faint of heart

At the time, I was able to get it done for around $16K. Today, I know it would be over $20K. I did it because the CCB leave zero dust and I like the way they look.

Below link is a great guide to the conversion (As noted * you won’t need some of the components shared with your SL65):

Good Luck
