Did the Muffler Delete today
I am actually disappointed and extremely surprised that removing the mufflers really did not do that much to increase the sound level. I honestly could not hear the exhaust while traveling home on 195 here in South Florida. I stopped for gas and put the top down and that is when I could hear the slightly improved growl. I believe the turbos are the culprit with really dampening the sound. When I had my '10 E550 coupe and removed the mufflers, it was night and day. I think I might go back in the very near future and remove the resonators as well.

I too am searching for more sound on my '18 SL550. Can barely hear it in Sport+ with the windows up. Did you have to do any cutting, or was it just a matter of unbolting the mufflers and replacing them with straight pipes? The ideal setup for me would be keeping the adjustable sound the OEM mufflers offer, but a bit louder. Would love to hear a sound clip of muffler delete, and another with resonators deleted, if you choose to do that.

So after having the muffler delete for a few weeks now, I am actually very happy with the sound. Not sure why I can hear it more now than after the first few days, but it is now a perfect growl. I feel it could be a touch louder but I am very happy with it. I took it to an exhaust shop that does custom exhausts, the majority of their work is muffler delete. They cut the mufflers off and replace them with custom mandrel bent pipe that they weld in. This is the second Mercedes I have taken to them and they do amazing work. The shop is GExhaust and they have a few locations around South Florida. I don't have any sound clips but if you are around Miami, I would be more than happy to meet up so you can hear in person. At this point, I think removing the resonators as well might be a touch too loud but I haven't ruled it out. If you are looking for a slightly louder, deeper growl that is not obnoxious, I think you will be very happy with it. For $200, it is a no brainer.

Man, that's so tempting and so easy! My only real concern is reversing the process if A, I find it's too loud, and B, how difficult will it be when I eventually go to sell it. Because, there's always that next car somewhere down the road! I'm going to ask my trusted Indy garage what their thoughts are on this and go from there. The owner is a real motorhead, and worked on my GTR (and other German marques) back in the day. Post a drive away clip of you get a chance!

Putting the mufflers back will be just as easy as taking them off. If you have a GTR, no way will it be too loud. It is about the volume of an SL63 AMG. Where in FL are you?

Which mufflers did you remove? The middle ones don't give too much of an increase in volume but they do add some nice burble. The rear ones do a lot of the work to cut down on noise.

Ideally, I would like to keep the same european, exotic tone and timber the OEM exhaust has, but with a little more sound volume. Any suggestions? What I don't want to do is make it sound like a muscle car. Also, has anyone used the Renntech "black box" that allows the exhaust flaps to stay open regardless of setting, ie Comfort, Sport, Sport+ with the ability to go back to stock config with the press of their key fob?

Update: turns out the Renntech "black box" exhaust switch only works with AMG cars. Mine is a standard car. Newbie mistake! Still afraid of too much sound from eliminating the mufflers, I ended up getting the Renntech Sport Mufflers, and couldn't be happier. It gave me a little more sound volume, while keeping the same oem tone. Seems to be getting better as I put more miles on them, although that could be me. The car is (mechanically) perfect now. I will be changing wheels soon to make it completely perfect to my eyes and ears. I love the oem wheels from the 2013 SL.

For fellow members who think it sounds like a ford mustang the answer is a definate no.
not going to get into an argument on what car sounds like what but as a person who owned a mustang before and a corvette before this in person sounds more like an sl63 rather than an american muscle/pony car.
no droning and only gets rumbly when you step on it.
if i were to do it all over again and understanding how the exhaust setup in our cars are like. To keep costs down i’d just delete 2 of the mufflers right after the H pipe to see how it sounds first as these cars come with 4 mufflers.
then maybe try out deleting resonators maybe.
on a different forum a member used magnaflow mufflers with sonewhat nice rumbly results.
my 2 cents
