To warranty or not? That is the question!

As some of you know, I have a 2019 SL450. It has ABC. It has around 3,700 miles on it. The original 4 year warranty will expire next month and I'm trying to decide if I should go for an extended
warranty or not. While I own the car, it will never see many miles. However, if I sell it, a new buyer would probably really like an extended factory warranty. $3,830.00 for another 3 years and up
to 75K miles. Decisions, decisions! Your thoughts would be appreciated.

My experience: Bought a 2 year extension of the CPO warranty and never used it. Two months after it expired one of the hydraulic lines in the trunk sprung a leak. Cost about $1000 to replace. I usually do not buy extended warranties but the SL was my first Benz and I was nervous. If you can self insure I would pass. I did use the first year of the CPO to replace the engine and transmission mounts.

Well, if you want to sell it then don't buy any warranty, the "new" owner can do that, on the other hand, based on how much you drive it, if I would be you I wouldn't buy any warranty, hopefully these cars are not failing, at a cost of several thousand dollars, before , let's say, 20,000 miles....just my .02 since you've asked.

My take is that you buy the warranty provided this is the new car extended warranty. The benefit of the warranty is obvious (this being the most complete MB warranty coverage vs CPO) and you can cash out if you sell the car. They pro-rate the use or non-use of the warranty. This way you have peace of mind and if you sell the car you get money back or sell for more with the transferable warranty.
I am not sure about the cost though; we got our 25% off list on ours for the AMG and you can shop for warranty prices at MB dealers or go with 3rd party insurance company. I think they were some threads that showed the dealer with best discounts.
Either way, you have enough money in the car (including the CCB's/wheels) that it's worthwhile IMO.

I am bias, but I would never buy a high end car like an SL without a EW. I purchased a EW on my current SL and ended up having some problems with my car that had it out of order for a few months. $15k in repair cost and a $100 deductible later and I was cruising once again. I am covered until 165k miles and the warranty cost me $2,400, or $3,400 I think, but I can't remember. Less the red tape during claims I made out like a bandit. You may never ever use, or need the EW at all, but if you do boy will you be glad you have it.

Either way best wishes......

$3,830 ÷ 3 ÷ 365 = $3.50 per day. From this perspective, the money is not that much. Just about the money to buy a daily newspaper from the stand?
Even if nothing happens, the peace of mind is invaluable.
This is just like buying travel insurance or health insurance, you never wish you will need it but you will be glad to have it when you do need it.

If it were me, I would buy the extended warranty.

This might be a good test to help determine whether to buy an extended policy or self insure. Does anyone have a manual or program that tells the labor hours to replace engine and/or transmission mounts that are shown on the attached link.

https://www.mercedesbenzpartscenter....trans-mounting

I suspect that parts and labor for replacing mounts is a very minor cost compared to other possible problems. OTOH, if you only drive a few thousand miles a year, the car is garaged, etc., etc. the likelihood is that needed repairs will start shortly after the warranty runs out.

I did buy an extended warranty.

What about those owners like me that have an older model not eligible for a MB EW? Any 3rd party that are decent?

Scroll up for my prior post.
I will look up the name of the company tomorrow. My paperwork is not handy.

Yes, satisfied.
You have to make sure the dealer understands how the warranty works before the work starts. The repair dealer must be willing to contact the warranty company by emailing them the repair report, before work begins for approval and then email pictures of the failed items during the repair. The repair dealer receives payment via credit card by phone from the EW company usual instantly, or within the hour. I was annoyed at first, but later understood it was just their policies..

FYI we have the same year SL

Figure cost per mile you expect to drive over that term....

Based on car having about 3800miles by time OEM bumper to bumper expires (4 years).
And this EW costs $3800 for 4 yrs
So $1/mile - DAYUM to me that is a lot of dough for so little miles driven and something you may never need.

If you need a repair that costs more than $3800 with a car under 8000 miles is NUTZ and probably would not get much for it you fixed it and tried to sell it since CARFAX would let the world see you had major repair.

Vehicle Sitting that much, I would be more afraid of Squirrels, mice and other critters doing damage - chewing on wires, carpet etc - making little rat condos inside places.

Interest rates up - Smart guy like you could invest the $3800 and make some coin for next car or MINOR repair.

It is GAMBLING and sometimes you win and sometimes you lose...
Just get the odds in your favor is all you can do and luck and mother nature take care of the rest.

Good Luck and drive that car more - she wants to be driven.

When we bought the SL, we bought the extended warranty. We had the SL about 3 or 4 years. When we got a new MB, the dealer we bought the MB warranty from refunded quite a bit of the original cost. We could get a check cut or we could apply the amount to another extended warranty on the new MB. The refund paid a big chunk of the new extended warranty.

I am not an extended warranty person..... except on MB products that I own. I only want the MB factory warranty though. I have heard a lot of bad things about the ones you see advertised. Their refund system is pretty good the way it worked in my opinion.
