SL/R231: Passenger side of center console won't open

Passenger side of center console won't open
After 1.5 yrs of trouble free ownership of my 2018 SL550, the passenger side of the center console suddenly won't open when I push the driver's side button. I looked, but can't figure out how to make it open. Help!

Quick update: After further troubleshooting, I discovered the lifting spring that opens the pass side no longer works. It's either broken, or detached from its mounting point. If I press the release button a 2nd time after the driver's side pops open, it frees the pass side to open if I lift it. Any thoughts on fixing it?
