Center console not opening

I have a friend in Naples FL with a 2016 SL550. He purchased the MB extended warranty with the car when he bought it. The center console is not operating and neither door opens when the button is depressed. He took it to MB in Bonita Springs to have it checked. They informed him this morning that it isn't covered under the MB extended warranty as it is deemed to be "cosmetic". How in the Hell is a broken or inoperable part
cosmetic. It is amazing how many of these issues I see on here considering the cost of these warranty packages. They did, however, offer to repair it "for only $2400.00." I've seen on here that it is a common problem in the SL, although our 2014 SL550 still works. He is going to the dealership owner to dispute the decision. I'm following with interest to see how that works out. Anyone here had theirs fixed and covered under the MB extended warranty?

I would think that is what a logical person with average intelligence would deduct. However, it seems like he is going to have to fight to have this covered under warranty. After reading tons of examples on here there is not much reason to believe MBUSA will be an ally or offer assistance to him. I suggested he go to the owner of the dealership and make his case. I am hoping someone can jump in that has crossed this bridge already and had success

How flexible is your friend? Can he touch his toes? It sounds like they want him to grab his ankles.

That said, your description of his problems is a little confusing. Can you be a little more descriptive when you say, "The center console is not operating and neither door opens when the button is depressed."? The doors don't have buttons that open them.

I read it as the doors of the center console don't open when the button is pushed. I could be wrong, been a long day...

The console release mechanism, I call it a button which is probably a poor choice, when pushed is not activating the two doors. He has to depress and manually pull the doors open.

Sounds like the springs are either broken or out out place. The top of the console ("doors") can be removed. There are some YouTube videos showing how to do this. Perhaps you/he can remove and inspect them.

I think it may just not be worded clearly. The center console storage DOES have doors that open with a push in style button, or tab, or release, etc. at the front top of the storage. When that item is pushed your center console doors open. Sometimes I have to push the release twice as the left door (closest to driver) will open and not the right side. A second push opens the right side, however that might be because I have a cell charger cord coming out from inside the console that may prevent the doors from opening correctly when the cord is stuck between the doors and the doors are shut.

I get what you are saying. I posted a pic of the button to my console doors. I assume you are talking about button..

So, I just checked on my car. The big silver button pushes two latches (one for each door) to release the catch. Then the doors should spring open. If they don't, then the springs are broken/missing/out of place, or there is something jamming them from opening. This should not be hard to diagnose and resolve, certainly not for $2400! I'll do it for half that! :P

He is probably handy enough to fix it, and likely would if he didn't have the extended warranty. It's clearly outrageous to charge $2400 for the repair, say it is cosmetic and deny use of an overpriced extended warranty. I hoped someone had already experienced this and had it covered by the EW.

So, was the extended warranty an actual MB product, or a 3rd party Vehicle Service Contract (VSC) sold through the dealership? (VSCs are technically (and legally) NOT Extended Warranties.)

I know VSCs are cancelable for full or partial refund at any time during the service period. Not sure about a Mercedes Extended Warranty. If it is a VSC and they are giving him a hard time, maybe he should cancel and get a better one. There are several good ones out there and a whole discussion forum about them here.

That is a good question. He mentioned to me that it was the MB product, but I'll have to get him to check that to verify. If I recall correctly it was between 5 and 6,000 dollars.

Depending on the mileage, that's no bargain. Check with @Highline-Autos on this site for some good coverage and prices for Vehicle Service Contracts. It seems Fidelity, Freedom, and Endurance are good 3rd party VSC companies.

Highline Autos is a dealer for Fidelity and Freedom. Endurance is direct sales through their website.

That's why I asked what kind of "extended warranty" it was. I don't know but assumed that MB extended warranties were what CPO cars carried. However, that could be a totally bad assumption. Seems to me that if you pay $5000-$6000 for an "extended warranty", you would get something like this covered. That whole top piece is easily replaceable. I can't see where it would cost $2400.

There's one on eBay for $245, but the spring is broken. Hmmmm, sounds like a common problem.

It's called a "storage compartment flap" or "armrest assembly". Depending on the color, it runs between $400-$550 new.

It was under 20,000 miles when he bought it and has driven it sparingly since. I thought the price was high for the EW, but I admit I may be out of touch with reality.

my MB 7 year/75000 mile LEW was $3795 from MB Louisville (Jeff Jackson). more that $1000 less than two other dealers quoted.

This is a fairly common issue with R231’s

$2400 is one zero off from the $240 this repair should cost ☹️

Your hinges need to be replaced or repaired. I believe there is a video detailing the process on here.
