SL/R232: Ongoing Battery Issues
#76
I also have a 2022 SL63 with consistent reliability issues. I maybe have 1400 miles since August, with the majority accrued shuttling the car back and fourth to service.
I have had multiple prior AMG models (and have 2 other AMG cars in addition to this SL at present) — and I’ve never had an issue with any!
All I want is a car that will start after 2 days left at the airport! Instead I have a car I no longer trust— as even when it starts, I often get ‘do not drive’ messages relating to the 4 wheel steering and suspension, in addition to a litany of other warning lights.
Most recently, even when briefly ‘jump started’, the car would putter like a 30 year old Hyundai before immediately stalling out. It had to be towed in (not before MB roadside attempted to charge me $450 for the 30 mile tow).
I’ve dealt with my dealer for years and they have been great — but I can’t help but feel they have ZERO resources from MBUSA on how to remedy or even escalate these types of issues.
Meanwhile it is peak season to enjoy an SL— and the car is a paperweight across town that continues to depreciate. I feel somewhat helpless… as if MBUSA is insinuating that none of the issues I’ve experienced would be occurring if I drove the car daily.
This whole expedience, especially with MBUSA’s laissez-faire attitude that seems to be consistent with what others are experiencing on this thread— has put a really bad taste in my mouth with the brand especially at this price point. I’ve already canceled my S63 and continue to tell my friends about my nearly laughable “best or nothing” experience.
Hoping for a quick resolution to this persistent brain-freeze. All I want is a car to provide reliable transportation from A to B— and then start reliably to take me to C!
I’ll update later this week as we round the bases on week 3 of the car being in service (not counting prior attempts to remedy)…

If the situation is as bad as you say, why wouldn't you Lemon Law the car? It does not affect the dealer. It is an action with MBUSA. And if you are successful, MBUSA buys back the car not the dealership. I did it several years ago with a different manufacturer. The dealership was super sympathetic and even provided copies of all the service work. The arbitration panel gave me a full refund including all of the aftermarket add ons I put on the car. I waited almost 2 years to pursue the Lemon Law. If I knew how easy it was to do, I would have done it much sooner. Years later, I even bought another car from the same manufacturer and dealership (no issues the second time around).

2022 MB SL63 AMG Battery low issues
My SL63 has been at the dealer for a week due to continuing issues with the battery; They switched out the battery to see if it was a bad battery but had the same problem with the new one. As mentioned in previous threads, there seems to be a drain somewhere in the system on the battery even when the car is locked. They are investigating but unsure. The car only has 207 miles on it. Hopefully they have some news by the end of the week but what a disappointment.

I purchased the brand new 2022 MB SL63 AMG on 2/4/2023. It went to dealer service four time total and over 30 days at the dealer so far and they still have not figured out what cause the 12 volt starter battery is low message keep coming back. Consquently, my convertible was not working too. They did replace the battery with new one on second visit, but still doing same thing. It is still at dealer and going 33 days. They insist MB does not have similar or same reported problem since the model is such a new.

The line you've been given is total horse pucky. It is a well known issue in Mercedes. The General Manager of my dealership: Fletcher Jones in Newport Beach has had the same problem with his own SL63 AMG. I talked with him about 5 months ago. The Newport Beach Store is the largest Mercedes dealership in the USA. My car when in for the problem was daily linked up with engineering in Germany. Not a new issue now. I've had the car since early September. Not an issue for me anymore as I don't use MercedesMe and always lock the car with a double tap when I park - even in my garage. Yes it shouldn't act this way but it is no longer a problem for me. I just came back to LA after a week in South Carolina - no problem with the battery. Same after a month in India in November.
I’m very interested in your solution. My SL63 has been at the dealer more than I’ve had it. Only 341 miles since Dec. 26, 2022 when we picked it up. This time they have had it almost 7 weeks.
Did you delete the MercedesMe app from your phone ? If so, after deleting the app and only double clicking the key — no more battery drain ? That’s all ? Thank you.

No I've not deleted the MercedesMe app but never use it. And periodically get low battery or critical battery notices on it which show up on my phone - but I ignore them. And drive the car normally. Once or twice I have stuck it on an old Mercedes charger that I had from a GTS that I had. But the key seems to be to drive it regularly or if unable then to double tap the lock on the fob and then move the fob a good distance away. That way the fob can't "talk" to the car. This is certainly not good (to have to lock the car when it is in the garage) but the car is still drivable and performs well for me. A thorough search of this site will find a number of threads on the issue.
Thank you so much, John. I’ve read this thread and the Facebook thread as well. I think following all of the advice here, I as you can learn to live with the car.
Just wondering if you are going to the SoCal & NorCal AMG Private Lounge meet -up in Morro Bay on April 15 ?

Update from my weekly wash cycle: for the second week in a row, I had no battery warnings at all either by text or email. Something changed breaking a consistent pattern over 8 months of multiple warnings each wash time. I earlier hoped maybe they made some unannounced software change to fix/improve the constant battery warning problem. Later I thought that I hope it was not a software fix to mask the problem, rather than fix it. I am also using the double-click procedure when locking every time now so maybe that has had an influence. Whatever, it's better for now.

I believe those may have been related to NTG7
I’m not sure SAM’s and ECU can be updated OTA on the R232. Part of the problem here is the cars are so new, there’s not a substantial knowledge base and very little service experience at this point.

Unfortunately, it will give you a software version, but won't tell you if it's the latest or revision history on your car. The app should notify you too (before installation).
There's not a "revision history list" available externally outside Mercedes that I know of. Plus as I mentioned above, not a lot of knowledge base, service experience at this point outside warranty issues.
You guys could compare versions though....
If everyone has the same version, then probably no revisions.
Good Luck.

As far as NTG7, from memory without having a car here in my shop. I believe you have to go to settings, all setting, then info.

That is interesting, well at least we now know there has been at least one update to NTG7 on the SL63 R232’s.
@ho1105 if you got a notification of an update, perhaps you have a newer version? Or maybe you also have V3?
It’s quite probable @California John ’s revision was installed at the Dealership, or maybe it was OTA since he took delivery of his car first. (but I don’t believe they are updating NTG OTA)
It might help to post production date of your car’s too.
@JohnGigi that is V2 dating from late 2021 I believe. I’ve seen that software version before on other models, it predates V3 on @California John ‘s SL63.
Though I’m not a big fan of the rolling Jelly Bean’s (Tesla). One thing they do right, is treat software like they do in the PC industry.
They publish software revisions and bug fixes/added features.

I believe you can try to use the MercedesME app to “tickle” the server to push the newest version out to your cars. Though it seems to have a mind of its own and probably will require an update to be installed by the dealer.
Good Luck
