2022 W232 Grinding Noise Hard Left/Right Turn When Cold

I have a 2022 W232 with less than 1,500 miles on it, that makes a grinding noise when making a hard left/right turn, especially when it's below 40 degrees outside.

What could be the cause of that?

I’ve noticed something similar when turning the wheel all the way to one side or the other. I thought it might be the tires rubbing on something in the wheel well. I’ve been debating making a service appointment for it.

From what I can find looks like Electric steering power assist? IF not then check pump and flid level otherwise

is sound occurring at end of wheel movement or the entire time?

I would get on lift and move wheels left and right to check for interference where something is touching but should not be.

If OK. I would check wheel bearings and brakes.

Then check steering rack
Then steering linkage external to cabin
then Steering wheel and linkages etc inside.

I also read these have rear wheel steering. Wonder if it could be due to that system?

thank you! For me it’s at the end of the wheel movement. Could be electric assist kind of freaking out when you get to the end of the turning radius.

I think I will bring it in. I have almost 600 miles on mine and I’m planning to take it to the track once I cross nicely over 1000, so I need to get it sorted.

Are you sure you're not experiencing tread slip from the ackermann effect on front steering geometry?

Wikipedia on Ackermann

From the article "The use of such geometry helps reduce tire temperatures during high-speed cornering but compromises performance in low-speed maneuvers" This is common on high performance cars with more aggressive steering geometry, wide tires, and summer rubber compounds in cold weather. The tread doesn't "slip" cleanly over the ground near/at full steering lock when moving due to the different tracks each front wheel takes, and you end up with juddering and noises as the slip occurs.

The noise in cold weather is because of the summer tires. The rubber compound doesn’t like temps below 45 degrees. This is normal.

It's the tires. I had the techs at the dealership look at it, and they assured me it's not an issue whatsoever - just an annoyance that's shared across many sports cars with summer tires.

I have this same non problem.
After cold starting, and trying to turn steering wheel not even a full turn, there is a tire plowing on pavement sound, with accompanying ratcheting thumping.
Dealer said it’s normal until tires warmup.

The way several here have described this, it would appear that they have never experienced it before with other vehicles, in the same place, under the same conditions. If that is so, WHY is it showing up with their new SL and not with their other vehicles?

Maybe they've never had AWD cars with summer tires on it before. Having had several and living where it's quite cold in the winter, I can assure you the Ackerman effect is not limited to R232 SLs.

Along the lines of what @drgek said , most cars do not come with summer tires. Cars with all season or winter tires will not have the noise at low temps. I changed the summer tires on my Boxster to high performance all season tires last year to stop my wife from asking about the chattering noise in the winter (and to ensure we had adequate grip in the cold temps). When I lived in Connecticut all of my cars had a set of dedicated summer tires and a set of winter tires (even our SUVs for better snow braking performance). In Atlanta, snow is very rare so I keep the summer tires on my SL and put up with the noise until the temps rise during the winter mornings.
