Currently driving an Audi 80 & stashing away $$ for my sweet SL! Can't wait!
Question Air bag to NO air bag...

Over the last year I have been educating myself on these sweet 107's. I have been looking mainly at 1985 & older simply because I don't want an airbag in the wheel (being only 5' tall) Is it LEGAL to remove a steering wheel with an airbag & replace it with...let's say...a nice Nardi?? That would open up my options as to what I can buy if this could be done.

Thanks for any help!
Mo~

That wasn't necessary...but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what does "being only 5' tall" have to do with not wanting an airbag-equipped steering wheel?

My W126 has a positively huge steering wheel, and the last girlfriend who was allowed to drive it was 5'1. No problems there.

Have you test-driven a nice post-1985 model and found the steering wheel to be hard to look over?

The problem is that they are dangerous for "small" people if they deploy. I am a very petite person and have to sit extremely close to the wheel. The warnings on the visors always say not to sit closer than necessary, but I have to sit nearly all the way up!

Would it be easier to modify the pedals or pedal positioning? Maybe or maybe not...

I'm not sure how easy it would (or wouldn't) be, but from what I've seen it's not all that uncommon, or all that difficult, to upgrade to a custom steering wheel.

Hmm...maybe I'll just ask a local Cop or inspection station....

I put a re-manufactured wood non-airbag 380SL style wheel on my 560SL and had no issues that I recall; it's been a few years. There is a company in Texas that has the electrical parts needed to fool the vehicle's electronics if no airbag is present (had to use them for my Miata). The mod kit was under $25 at the time and the instructions were clear.
