SL/R107: Need part identified

1980 280 SL
No hoax?? Father, who is not a car guy at all, bought this car from his sister years ago. Has sat in his garage for about ten years, finally got it running. Found this part and wants to know what it is.

OK...I guess the question would be WHERE was it found? It almost looks like some kind of specialized tool. Was it in the trunk or glove box? The old guys over on the R107 forum on Benzworld.org might be a place to check, too.

Based on this one photo alone, I think it may be a home-made tool of some kind - judging by the welds and the lack of any stamping with either Mercedes-Benz or the star logo. A mystery.
