MotoLita Steering wheel causes fuse to blow

I have a moto-lita steering wheel i like very much, purchased from another user. It causes a fuse blow everytime i use the horn however.

I would like to find the solution if not the reason. I have taken the car to a few MB specialists who say that the moto-lita build quality is poor and "cheap"

However it was not cheap.... and it occurs to me that it may be possible to improve the horn apparat without replacing the wheel. Perhaps I can simply replace the horn part of the unit?

Any ideas? It is just not safe to ride in new york without the capability to blast otherwise well-deserving motorists who believe that two cars can occupy the same physical space.

I found a thread on here (I think) that tells how to make short finder. Essentialy you put aligator clips on one end of an extension cord and solder on a 12 volt light bulb to the other. The light bulb gives enough resistance that the wiring won't catch fire when you replace the fuse with an aligator clip on each side of the fuse clip.
Just clip on the aligators, then start moving the wires around. The short shoould be between the horn and the button, because the horn would have enough resistance that the fuse would not blow. I think most likely the short is in the wire in the steering collum, You could run a by-pass wire to test that theory.
You might also check the Motolita web site to double check the installation.

Thank you. We will give that a try.... or do you know if it is possible to simply purchase the central horn unit (apart from the wheel)? In that case, perhaps we could bypass the troubleshooting and simply install a horn "section" that works best with R107.

I would by-pass the steering collum wiring first, it wouldn't be that hard to fish a new/temporary wire through the collum. I've known of several cars (not 107s) that shorted out the horn wire. although it may be an incompatible horn button is why they sold you the steering wheel.

Sad. But you are likely right. OK. Will do.

Cheers,

Youve got a sharp eye! I had not considered selling her before especially since clearance prices dont match the sentimental value usually.

I just love the 380SL. The lines are clean, it is just a sharp car -- particularly IMHO when the headlights and bumpers are restored to the european hardware. And inside it is spacious and comfortable. I have other cars that are faster and fancier, but it is always a joy to sit at the helm of Lulubelle. If you are in the market, the owner of one of the garages at which I service her (a gal one must have a stable of suitors to take advantage of their respective 'skill sets') has a beautiful 560SL which he has been trying to sell at a very reasonable price. I do not believe he has sold it yet. Autobahn Service Center on Park Avenue. And they know Lulubelle well (for general servicing). Say hello.

Sounds good to me...I come from a long line of Vintage Benzes so the R107 is a natural for me as the wife abhors my taste for w123s lol..

I do all of my own work so i don't mind a fixer upper but nonetheless I will stop by Autobahn to check out this 560SL..

Cheers!
