Long travel brake pedal 300SL 107 1989

I have a long travel brake pedal. Just fitted new rear brake calipers, new rear disks and pads. Front twin piston calipers with new pistons and repair kit, new disks. Brakes have been bled 3 times and no air in system with engine running and not running. Still the brake pedal travels a long way before engaging but stops immediately at end of travel. The car has had a total rebuild so I have no reference point to judge where the brake pedal should be, but it appears to be way too excessive. Any ideas?

bleed again...
Start farthest from MAster cylinder and work your way closer so
RR - LR - RF - LF

Not sure but did it have ABS back then?

Yes, bled the brakes furthest from master cylinder and worked forward. Yes the car has ABS brakes.

Just fitted the new master cylinder and new reservoir. Re-bled the whole system twice, back to front but has made no difference and I still have a long pedal. There is no air in the system at all. Could it be something to do with ABS pump?

Make sure the bleeder screw on the caliper is on the top and not the bottom.
