Tyre on the road....

Hi,

I know exactly how you feel. I was driving along the motorway on April 1st (of all days) and I was about to join another motorway in a filter lane and I was behind a van...and I was just about to join when the van in front suddenly swerved and missed a tyre that was lying on the road..I of course did not know why he had swerved till it was too late and there was a car on the outside so i tried as best i could to swerve it however it richoted off my front bumper on the left leaving a crack in it. Luckily was not at bad as yours but still really annoyed me.

I have been thinking of what to replace it with and I have been quoted £175 for a normal bumper with £200 fitting and spraying. Or £450 for an AMG bumper with £300 fitting and spraying. I am thinking just to place a normal one as as I would hate to place an AMG on only for something similar to happen again!

Ouch, sorry to see that. When you drop the car off for repair, see if the bumper cover can be ordered from Mercedes painted. If not, make sure whomever paints it has the capability to apply the nano-tech clearcoat, otherwise your front-end will be more succeptible to chips, scratches, etc.

This would be ther perfect time to replace the regular SL55 bumper cover with the SL65/F1 package one!!!

If they will only give you one if you have an SL65 VIN............just go to ebay and see what's for sale and borrow a VIN!

Thanks for the well wishes. I dropped it off at Fletcher Jones today and I should know in a day or two the extent of the damage. Hopefully nothing that can't be fixed... The service advisor said casually, "after something like this a lot of owners are hoping the car is declared totalled..."

I think that the grills and fog lights are different so they would need to be replaced as well.

I can't believe some guys are hoping that their car is totalled after something like that. People are too neurotic over paintwork. I know with Ferrari that every car is taken out (regardless of weather) and thrashed at the factory by an angry Italian..........and they ALL have had paintwork. US Fcar guys are generally afraid that their car will get dusty, let alone wet.

Guys thanks for the sympathy... thank goodness I have the E55 to fell back on - I don't think I could have taken a couple of weeks in a C230 or a Murano.

Probably won't know until Tuesday the extent of the damage. I was able to drive the car into the dealership and nothing appeared to be leaking - no odd lights or warnings. The only thing that really concerned me was when my service advisor said, "so do you plan on keeping it?"

Ian:

It looks very minor... from the pictures, its just an intercooler and a bumper skin, plus the grilles. It looks like it should be under $2.5k in repairs.

Check with Randall in San Diego. They own a collision center that is top-notch, and they may have a bumper take-off from a brand new R230 SL55 - from the ones they convert for the local dealerships. If you can get one of these, then the paint would be the factory paint.

No, but that is one of my WORST nightmares (ergo I'm one of those guys who parks w/ the rear end sticking WAY out)! Had a shredded tire thrown at me by a rude semi-truck, I returned the favor by throwing it back at a BMW.

Looks fully repairable to me but I think $2.5k is light...

I'm thinking twice that amount myself... I'll post the full damage report as soon as I find out. One good thing, no matter the tab they've classified it under comprehensive and not collission - meaning it's a nofault accident. Glad my rates won't be impacted...

Well it's good it's covered by insurance with no effect on your rates. Is there a deductible? If the intercooler needs replacing, that has got to be in the 1 - 2k range alone. These cars are not cheap to buy and you can be certain they're not cheap to fix either.
