Go for an AMG R230 for sure. SL55 has gobs of power and is super fast, but if it isn't enough for you, there is always an SL65. We can't tell you which one to go for, that is what you have to decide on. Go test drive both of the cars and see which you like more.

SL65 versus SL55

I'm a new member here and was torn between that question myself. I ended up buying a 2006 SL65 (last Wednesday to be precise).. For me, the reasons were mostly emotional:

1. I wanted the best convertible money could buy (already have an F430 non-convertible so that would be redundant) and wanted something that was unique on the road. Not to offend anyone, but there are a lot of SL55's on the road (especially where I live in So Cal) - I wanted something a little different, a little more special.

2. I was concerned with all the talk about a replacement to the SL55 coming just around the corner (2007 probably) and wanted to make sure I had the latest model for a bit longer than a year or so.

3. I wanted to own a monster V12 engine - I've never owned a car with that big of an engine and 604hp is, uhhhm, a lot. While the 0 to 60mph time difference between the two cars is negligable, the torque and 40 to 80mph time difference felt incredible. At 40 to 60mph, the engine hums and the acceleration from that speed is like nothing I've felt before.

At the end of the day, the SL55 and SL65 are pretty damn close to each other. For me, the reasons were emotional and a lot of people would argue the extra cost for the SL65 is a waste - my wife certainly did.

Good luck.

Keep in mind that there is a CL65, and it has a back seat if that is important. Be sure to post some pics when you get it.

For me, I would consider an SL55 with the AMG performance package and engine mods by RENNtech or Kleemann. It should be faster than a stock SL65 and would cost considerably less.

No, I said the R230, the body code for the 2003+ SL's. There is a big difference in engines for the SL55 vs SL65. The SL65 has 111 hp on the SL55, and 222 lb-ft of torque over the SL55. The SL65 is the worlds most powerful mass production convertible. What other significant differences do you mean?

Just get the SL65 but, to be fair, give her a head start with her M5.

Or..

Go all out get the Renntech ECU and airbox for the SL65 and make it 680 hp with 870 lb-ft of torque (don't forget to upgrade the tires too).

Dont count out those little 4 cylinders... they can make so good power. There is a guy that races sometimes that has a dodge neon SRT-4 that runs low 11's and can get into the 10's with his boost all the way up. This was without NOS too... But based on the weight of the SL-65 they are very fast in comparison. You can go on Renntech website and take a look at some of our runs of our SL-65 AMG

Haha, he knew what was going to happen, he was just playing around. So you really like the SL65? I'd go for it then.
