SL500 replica (what's wrong with this picture)

I came across these pictures on the web. I knew it could be done, but to actually see it...

An R129 converted to R230. Impressive, but not needed...

"Interesting" is the right word.

It is however not as bad as this 500SL replica on an 86 Mustang GT frame (be very afraid): http://www.v8archie.com/ssl500fs.htm

I agree, I had an argument in my 129 with a gatepost and needed a new door. The alignment was never quite right, especially in the area of the plastic clip on lower panel at the back edge of the door though it was never as bad as this example. To get it right, you need to change the door hinges and put it on a jig to get the mounting points millimetre perfect.
