Tire Size Question

I know very little about tire sizing so I'm hoping someone will help me here. I picked up a used set of MAYA DTM rims and tires which came off a SL500.

The tires are:

Front: 245/40-19
Rear: 275/35-19

Any problem using these (are the smaller than stock)?

Also make sure the offsets on the Maya's have enough clearance if you're using this on your SL55 as the calipers on the SL55 are huge. Tire wire i think you maybe ok. But double check with others here.

fast cars and faster motorcycles ..
Ian,

i am confused.. are you going to put these on your SL55?
.
i am looking for a set of wheels for my SL55 and here's what i found.
.
stock SL55: front: 255/40 18 - 8.5 J wheel and i believe, a 35 offset
rear: 285/35 18 - 9.5 J wheel - 40 offset
.
SL 500 is the same (option)
.
optional 19" wheels from MB are: front: 255/35 19 - 8.5 J
rear: 285/30 19 - 9.5 J or 10 J
Cory at Kleeman recommended 9" x 19 front and 10.5" x 19 rears
.
.
20" would be: front: 255/30 20
rear: 295/25 20
Ben at Wheels Boutique ran 9" fronts and 11" rear wheels

good luck,,..

JR

hope it clears your calipers, sl-500 fronts have a slightly different offset, i would fit check it before mounting.

Ian,

The things that matter here are overall diameter, wheel offset/width.

From the sounds of it, your new wheels are within spec as far as wheel width, (judging by the tire sizes)

Offset you'll have to confirm.

Now the overall diameter issue, is important when considering things like ABS function, ESP, and speedometer accuracy.

comparing the sizes you gave, to the factory spec you will see the following discrepancies.

FRONT: New tires have a 2.55% larger overall diameter, resulting in a speedometer inaccuracy of ~2.61% i.e.. If your speedo reads 60MPH, you'll actually be going 58.4MPH.

REAR: New tires have a 2.71% larger overall diameter, resulting in a speedometer inaccuracy of 2.78%

I couldn't say how adversely this would effect ABS, and ESP function, but the issue of maintaining the correct overall diameter is fairly important.

Best of luck.

Appears to clear just fine... It was my MAJOR concern.

More reasons to swap out the tires. Thanks for a complete lesson.

audioguy,

if he used a 255/35/19 front vs stock and a 285/30/19 rear vs stock, how much would the discrepancy be? .. according to the calculations given to me, the stock diameter is 25.98" and 19" plus one would be 25.84"..

thanks,
JR

Brabus multipiece yes. I need to get them cleaned up and re-chromed. Hard to keep 20" wheels spiffy.
