SL 63 coming?
Does anyone know if MB is planning to phase out the supercharged engine and substitute it with the new 6,3 aspirated V8, as they are doing with all other models in their lineup?
Thank you

SL 63 will have turbocharged 6.3
The SL, CL, and S 63 will be turbocharged and have atleast 600 horsepower, probably somewhere between 600 to 675, we'll have to wait and see.
There's no damn way in this whole world Benz would ever ever ever ever ever put the same horsepower car in an ML and a SLK/CLK as an SL and CL And S.
517 horsepower ain't nearly enough in this horsepower war by the time the 2009 models come around.

..........The W208 CLK55 350HP, pre-2003 W220 S55, pre-2003 CL55, W163 ML55, W210 E55 all had 350HP.
.........I am not saying that there will or will not be a twin turbo S63, my point is that putting the same HP in the S class and CL class and other less expensive models has been done before. So saying it will never happen is factually incorrect.

my point was whether it makes sense to continue with the "old" turbocharged engine, when the "new" 6,3 aspirated is available, which also comes with the new 7 gears.
I was referring to the current SL AMG production, not the future ones

..........the "old" supercharged 5.4L engine is to continue in a slightly modified form in the G55, and SL55 for the near future.
..........the new 6.3L NA engine if turborcharged will have more HP and torque than the new 7 speed tranny can handle. Recall that the new W221 S65 has the so called old 5 speed tranny indicating that Mb is not willing to put the 7 speed tranny in anything more powerful than the current NA 6.3L engine.
...........therefore, if there is an SL63, then it will have to have the same HP and torque as the E63 in order to the new have the 7 speed tranny. And contrary to what was posted earlier, mercedes has placed equal HP engines across model lines for their AMG cars.
..........if the SL63 is to have a twin turbo 6.3L V8 as is being rumored, then the so called old 5 speed tranny and not the new 7 speed tranny will be used.
........I hope this answers your questions.

Because they just modified the supercharged 5.4, they would not come with the 6,3 V8 turbocharged in the SL (W230).
This engine comes in the S-class in autumn 2006 with more or less 575hp (S63). And indeed with the same 5 speed gearbox as the S65, because the 7 speed gearbox can't handle the torque!

?
Putting the same HP in the ML as in a CL was done before, but Benz and AMG have learned alot since then, and hopefully will not make the same mistake ever again.
And, since the supercharged 5.5 V-8 and 65 engines are still being use, Benz is surely then working on a future turbo'd version of the new 6.3 and possible a 48-Valve 69 AMG V-12 model for future use maybe as a 2010 year intro, but either way Benz will only go up in HP for the future, this HP race is not over yet at all, even Though Benz has been kicking a** in it for some time now.

Thank you for your very exaustive explanation, Ted, right now I am debating on my SL 55 replacement, and the choice is leaning towards the CLS, whose style seems to be more contemporary, but I guess this could be a new post

Everything I've read indicates a SL69 - A TT version of the 6.2L engine... out in 2009 as a 2010 model.

if i recall properly, then the AMG boss said in an interview that supercharging would not continue into AMG's future variants.
if the 63 engine were to be tt, then that would leave the 600 as the only 12C engine. unless, of course, there's some other plan we haven't yet speculated about.
i still don't understand why MB/AMG didn't simply re-engineer the current engines for 4v tech and other improvements that would've increased output and efficiences. could it possibly have cost LESS to develop and produce the new 63 rather than play with the 55 and 600 engines??
