SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Supercharged SLK55 VS Stock SL55

I am not sure of 1/4 mile or 0-60 times in SL55 as I have not raced mine at the drags as yet. I have heard that the SL55 modded out will be as fast or faster than a SL65. By mods I mean at least Kleemann stage 1 and 2 and LSD or Rentech, etc. I know that Kleemann has a new throttle body due out anytime (very expensive) that puts the SL55 horsepower with the other mods over 700. It will be very interesting to see how fast they are then. I do plan on getting the new package as soon as it is available. My car is extremely fast now (SL55) with Kleemann 1 and 2 and LSD. My friend has a SL600 with Kleeman mods and he thinks his is faster in the 1/4 and mine is faster 0-60. I hate the turbo lag in his car. I almost bought his before I found mine but enjoyed the SL55 much more; sound, balance, etc.

Scruffyone, SL is not meant for road course period and will never excel in that environment. Like I said before, I have a turbocharged lotus elise (300hp and 1,850lbs) that is mainly used for tracking and autocross. That car pulls close to 1.10G on the skidpad. What I need now is a fast, comfortable daily roadster that is also very capable at the dragstrip, handling is only a plus. If you consider handling too, SLK55 makes even more sense.
P.S. And I do believe a modded SLK55 is better for my needs because it provides nearly all the same features of the SL55 and is able to outgun it on the dragstrip without much fuss. The car I will get all depends if I can get a good deal on an SL600...

All it takes is pulley, ECU tune, headers, LSD, and nitrous and I'll give you a low 11s, maybe even high 10s timeslip for a SL55. All you have to do is provide me with a SL55 and I'd be happy to do the rest (I keep the car too) You can post up time slips all you want after that. Just tell me what you want me to run and i'll do it.

You're not going to be using nitrous on every dragstrip run, unless you want to blow your engine. You shouldn't even need nitrous to run mid 11's, pulley/ecu and headers should be enough. Why even bother with that risk when SL600 or a modded SLK55 don't need nitrous to run mid to low 11's? What about adding nitrous to an SL600/65? Now that would be something! Low 10's anyone?

10.4 in the new E55? That's very impressive. I remember Derek from this forum ran a 10.95 with Kleemann K2 + Nitrous not too long ago and it was a huge deal! This is also the fastest run currently on dragtimes.com. Why are there no threads about this new record-breaking run and why isn't it on drag times? Is there a slip? Also, it looks like E55 is much faster than Sl55. Do you know why this is the case? Why are we not seeing comparable runs with SL55's?

Yes, the new E55. There are threads in the E55 section. I have seen him run a bunch of times and I am friends with the owner. SL55 is slower due to weight and none of the owners are willing to push the envelope. He is building other cars as well so you'll be seeing alot more 10s benzes around. At least here on the east coast

A modded SL55 will have absolutely no chance against a stock SL65. If you go to dragtimes.com, you can see that a stock Sl600 ran 11.9 @ 120 and a stock SL65 ran 11.7 @ 125. The fastest modified Renntech SL55 ran 12.0 @ 118, and a kleemann stage 3 ran a 12.5. Plus you have to remember that with 600/65, the only mod you need is ECU chip, which is a no-brainer, takes 15 minutes, and everyone who can afford a 120k can afford to do the ECU. With SL55, in addition to the ECU, you need pulley, headers, cams, thorttle body, etc. All these upgrades are not only invasive and potentially troublesome, but extremely expensive and will surpess the cost of SL600! Looks like a waste of money to me to even bother with modifyng the SL55 when it has a hard time surpassing a stock SL600, and will be left in the dust by chipped SL600 that run low 11's. I'm not even talking about the SL65 here!

Tuskir- Stop basing all your comments on dragtimes. Not everyone posts their times on there. I know I dont. Go look up a CLK55 on there and I bet 10grand I'll beat anytime on there without spray! I told you an SL55 can run 11's.

I am basing my comments on all available data. In addition to dragtimes, I searched this forum for SL55 1/4 mile times, and the best I see are 12.1 with a Kleemann K3 and 12.0 with renntech stage 3. Dragtimes is probably the best source we have for 1/4 mile times, and seeing plenty SL55, but none in the 11's is discouraging, to say the least. If SL55 would be in the 11's, why aren't members posting here or on dragtimes. SL600 owners are doing it, E55 owners are doing, why not SL55 owners? I'm not saying SL55 cannot run 11's period, but if kleemann stage 3 and renntech stage 3 manage 12 flat, this does point to the fact that 11's is VERY hard for the SL55. Am I not right in saying that? Are you saying that these people who did post on dragtimes with renntech and kleemann mods don't know how to drive or that their cars have some type of a problem? Very unlikely...

No, did you know abou tMalcolms 10s E55? Or the other ones? They exist. With a good driver I bet the K3 SL55 would be in the 11's. I dont call that very hard at all. I'm not going to continue arguing with you. Do what you want.

I don't think its too much to ask for proof before coming to conclusions though... I can only base what I'm saying by the data currently available. As far as E55 goes, its been released at the same time as SL55 and there are plenty of documented low 11 second passes and one 10 second car that I personally know of (10.95). I just find it strange that every single pass on dragtimes for modded SL55 is in 12's, don't you? The magazines that tested kleemann K3 SL55 (like car and driver, supercar shootout) got the same exact time as dragtimes of 12.5. The same article, the same driver, at the same track and on the same day, got 11.9 with SL600. You can't blame the driver there, and I don't think you can blame the drivers that DID post their 12 flat times with K3 and renntech stage 3. Have you personally seen an SL55 running 11's? If you haven't, and the available data is pointing to the opposite, how can you make such conclusions?

I dont want to waste my time anymore. I'm not a magazine racer, I base my thoughts on what I see. Theres AT LEAST 3 10s E55s in my area. If an E55 can go 10.99 without nitrous, why cant an SL55 go 11's? Sure it weighs more (very similar cars still), but to cut a whole second off the 1/4? Come on now, you know better than that. I have nothing to prove here.

Now, when I go out clubbing with my friend who owns an SLK55, we hear nothing but good comments and not once did anyone refer to it as "girly". Not only that, the car is a huge chick magnet around south beach and stands out way more than SL, which is like every 3rd car here! Some people have even mistaken the SLK55 for the SLR, which is a compliment in my book. You guys cant honestly think that most people when they see an SLK55, will think its girly. SLK55's styling was recieved with great enthusiasm in the automotive world. Every single SLK55 review had posetive comments about its styling, including "Car and Driver", "Road and TracK', "Automobile", "Evo", etc and nothing "girly" was ever mentioned. Just because its small, saying its girly is stupid. Plenty of sports cars much smaller than SLK55. I guess my Lotus Elise is girly too, right? And a Radical SR8, Ariel Atom, etc. All of them real girly

This SLK55 is girly thing is rediculous. Out of all the SLK55 owners on this forum, I believe only 1 or 2 are female, never once have I seen a female driving SLK55. The only people who think SLK55 is girly are the SL55 owners that need to justify overpaying for their car in some way. SL is just as popular with women as the SLK. Female celebrities love the SL55, even Britney Spears has one! Not only that, homosexuals love it too and it made the "Top 10 Gayest" cars list.

It's becus they wear panties. Seriously if that is what you want buy it and let those that want to buy something different alone. Each made their choice based on their own preferences and going to one forum or another trying to tell them they made the wrong choice based on your preferences is really never going to fly.

Well, I owe both, and I don't think the SLK is manly. I dont think girlie fits the bill either, although the size of the car can give that type of impression. I personally think it is more of a yuppy car.
I drive the SL, and my wife drives the SLK. I like how tossable the SLK is, but that is not enough reason for me to drive it. It just does not appeal to me.
The SL is just a pig that can't handle worth anything, but that is not what it was intended for. The main reason the SLK handles better is physics. It's lighter & smaller, so it handles better.

what u cant buy after market is the prestige of an SL no matter how much stupid money u put into an SLK

I'm embarassed after reading this thread that someone actually wanted to compare a SLK55 vs. SL55 and the rest of you debated.
SAD.
