SL63 after the SL55???

Has anybody heard anything about a possible SL63 AMG?

I was just wondering, that almost all 55 AMG-s, E, S, CL, ML were changed into a 63 AMG, but what about the SL55? It is a 5 years old modell and the new engine does exist, so why don't MB brings out the SL63????

Because the 63 wouldn't do the SL AMG justice. I've heard from AMG people (FWIW) that an SL63 will NOT be available for this model year.

This one is kinda dicey. The new V8 just doesn't have torque for the SL IMO, but they did put it in the S and CL anyway so logically the SL would be next, but they haven't...yet. If the SL making the spy shot rounds is indeed another facelift and not a totally new car then I'd say that for 2009-10 there will be a SL63 naturally aspirated to go with the updated interior/styling, but it would be short lived since the turbo version of the new V8 comes online around 2010 or so. They're already getting as much 518hp out of the V8 without turbos so the next generation SL63 would have at least 580hp! I think we'll find out something this Sept when the Germans put all their latest and greatest on display at the Frankfurt (IAA) show. I personally think they're going to go with a facelift for the SL while they concentrate on bringing out the new CLK and E first and then the SL, since the SL has traditionally had a longer lifespan than any other Mercedes.

I thought the facelift already happened for the '07 SL's? Or did the extra power and slight changes to the bodywork and interior not count as a facelift?

Coz if AMG does that, then no one will buy the SL?

According to my information (see here from this thread) the spyshots are preliminary tests for a Black Series. Even the CLK DTM engine is being considered. However, nothing final yet and the project could be cancelled (like the turbo'd 63 engine was cancelled).

from what a some good sources have told me is that some euro laws have cracked down on the v8 supercharge engines (no joke) and the reason they could leave the 55 engine in the SL and not other body styles is because it is the oldest body style. they had to faze out that engine. all the new body styles got the 63 which has been proven to be a slightly less potent engine especially down low.
so do not expect a 63 on a SL until there is a NEW sl. Or (maybe) they throw twin turbs on the 63 engine.

If they get rid of the 55 engine in the SL.....hopefully it will help firm up our values!!! It is a great package.

Forgive me if I am wrong but didn't the new E class come out before the new SL, yet they sell an E63, so this theory can not be correct.

This is correct. Pedestrian safety laws dictate that there has to be a certain amount of space between hood and engine (for the pedestrians not to crack their head on the engine block), and the supercharger makes the engine 'too high'.

There were however more reasons like emission regulations (not sure EU or US) and they (AMG) just wanted to make their own engine, which they got a chance to do now.

The E-Class was one year earlier as xecution noted. However, the 63 engine suits the E-Class more, especially as an M5 competitor, so perhaps they chose to put it in there for that reason. Not quite sure about that one.

Yeah that was a facelift, a textbook example of one in fact. However the SL has always had a longer production run than other Mercedes (outside of the G-Wagen of course) so it will most likely get a 2nd facelift like the previous R129 SL did. The R129 got one first in 1996 and then in 1999.

Much newer article on the SL facelift, clearly a facelift not an all-new model is coming our way, most likely for the 2009 model year:

As of what I've red in a magazine article (I think its automobile magazine), they've interviewd one high ranked AMG personel and he said that AMG is done with the supercharger and is now going towards TURBO for forced induction. The SL (R230) came out as 2003 but started at around 2002. With the old (R129) body, it lasted like 10 years. Assuming this is the life span of the current SL, we should expect the all new at 2012 (probably, guessing here). I guess it will have a new engine OR based from the 6.2 BUT stroked down to provide the turbo. To what I can see, it MIGHT BE one of the two MAYBE.

Because the SL has never been a 7 year car like other Mercedes models, and the SL needs to keep pace with the rest of the lineup as far as technology and now looks goes.
