"My friends all drive Porsches"

Today three friends and myself went to lunch in Germany, basically to unleash our cars on the unrestricted Autobahn. They just recently bought a new Porsche (manual Turbo, tiptronic Turbo, tiptronic S) and I was anxious to see if my 4,5 year old SL55 could keep up with these brand new cars.

Max speed reached today by me was 171 MPH. Other traffic prevented higher speeds. This is strange since officially the 155 MPH speed-limiter was never removed AFAIK. And even stranger, in the past I have met with the limiter more than once. Note: 171 MPH was with the roof down. Im not sure, as I don't frequent these speeds, if the open roof kills the aerodynamic downforce compared to a closed roof.

As for keeping up with them, I was gladly surprised that in acceleration from aprox 75 MPH to 150 MPH I could almost keep up with the Tiptronic Turbo. It would just very slightly move away from me.

I got a compliment in disguise from one of them when they wondered if there was something wrong with my exhaust since it sounds to incredibly loud during full acceleration

All in all we had a very nice time on a very sunny day

Nice posse. 171 with the top down must have been quite an experience.

Yeah, that was interesting. Almost no turbulence in the car (windows and windshield up). A lot of windnoise though.

I love that turbo with the all red tail lamps.. Just a personal mod, or an option in Germany?
Nice song reference too!
put a few mods in your SL and before you know it, you'll be trying to make amends.

It became an official option just yet and he had it retrofitted. But it should be available to everybody who is ordering new now.

Nice song reference too!

Nah, I just open the top and they all grind their teeth

Looks like you had a lot of fun.
Btw,a top down will kill your aerodynamics by a significant degree.
Your car must have it's limiter much higher then usual 155,all AMGs I had were calibrated at that limit spot on.

The Porsches are nice but you are the only one that can put your top down in under 8 seconds

I agree. But the weird thing is that it used to have a limiter at 155MPH, as I have experienced several times before. And I've never asked anyone to remove the limiter, and only one Mercedes workshop, AMG and MBenzNL have worked on the car since I have it.

I'll call AMG one of these days to see what they make of this...

Sounds like a good day. I'm suprised to hear that the turbo tip pulled away so slowly at that speed. Was Sport mode/overboost off? Maybe more loss with the autobox?

Nope, all systems were on and Sport-Chrono present. He (as well as I) was giving it all he could. We were going for 300Km/h (186 MPH) but unfortunately didn't make it.

Dunno, you would imagine that at those speeds the autobox is locked. I didn't get the chance to race the manual Porsche flat out because of other traffic.

No we didn't, just Autobahn racing. But I'm very very very sure that even without a chip in the Turbo the SL would get embarrassingly murdered.

For sure. Said it before, my stock 6sp turbo pulls on my K2, but ever so slightly. Only tried it to 140 though.

I paid good money to RennTech to remove my top-speed-limiter on my 05SL55

and they gave me a larger Supercharger Pulley and a 2nd Intercooler and Upgraded/i.e. Larger Intercooler pump at the same time................

+56RWHP and 61 Ft. Lbs..........Car will do 170 indicated at the top of 4th gear now.......(around 6600 RPMs)

I'm pleased....and grateful to Adam@Euroelites.......and Tony.

Yes it would get murdered, (i've owned a 911 turbo) But IMO the SL looks and sounds better, if it didn't, i'd be driving a Porsche . Here in the States we don't get to drive that fast except at a track .

The new Turbo is such a beast. However, if you rocked up in an SL65 then at those speeds the P-Cars won't have any reply

phew good to hear... for a moment i thought something was wrong with my CLS55... for the 3 months of ownership no car has ever disappeared like that. In addition it was around 8c outside and ever so slightly damp so i spun all the way to 140km/h... the turbo just jumped the line and that was it, no drama , no wheelspin, nothing..

anyways glad you enjoyed your run

Don't sweat it. Those damn things are so quick off the line it's just not even funny anymore. The 4WD, lower weight and kick-*** engine are a killer.

When grip and momentum are less of an issue (at higher speeds) a 63 or 55 AMG can play along just nicely. Just don't expect to win.

997TT can hit 60mph in 3.2secs while even a novice can get 3.5 in the tiptronic version in practically any conditions. There's no stoplight car like it and as for the twisties...

Question Geez,since the stock 997TT hits 60 in 3.2, what about Ben's 700+ TT?

Geez, since the stock 997TT hits 60 in 3.2, what about Ben Treynor's 700+ 997TT? 2.7 Seconds?
